The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofits and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about these or other volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, ext. 5512, or at http://www.uwsummit.org.
Akron General Medical Center (Akron General Health System): Volunteers needed once a week or more between noon and 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays to provide basic wheelchair assistance to patients and visitors. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Pregnancy Services: Volunteers needed to adopt a client or family and provide gifts of new clothing and toys for Christmas. Names, number in family, sizes and wish list will be provided.
Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 28 to assist with Akron's annual Welcome Santa Holiday Parade. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Summit Community Action/Earned Income Tax Credit Program: Tax season volunteers (Jan. 25-April 12) needed between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays for a minimum of two hours per week for the following areas: tax preparers, quality reviewers, intake specialists, greeters and office assistants. Training required. Minimum age: 18, 16 for greeters and office assistants.
Akron Urban League: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 20 to assemble Thanksgiving food baskets and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 23 to help distribute baskets to families in need. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.
Career Nurse Assistants Program: Experienced volunteers needed to create and edit quarterly newsletters using MS Publisher. Minimum age: 18.
Christian Fellowship Basketball League: Volunteers needed 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays and weekends, for a minimum of one day a week, to work with children ages 7-18 in coaching, physical fitness training and score keeping. Minimum age: 15, 12 with adult supervision.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Volunteer elves needed for annual Polar Express program Nov. 18-Dec. 19; times vary. Minimum age: 16, 12 with adult supervision.
CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 14 to assist with Neighbors Helping Neighbors fall cleanup event. Minimum age: 16, 13 with adult supervision.
Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed Mondays through Saturdays to assist with light maintenance/repair needs, painting and washing windows. Minimum age: 16.
Greater East Ohio Area Alzheimer's Association: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, a minimum of three or four hours every two weeks, to assist with calling caregiver support group members to remind them of upcoming meetings. Minimum age: 18.
Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers needed to host and provide a meal for the partner families/volunteers Thanksgiving party. Day and time are flexible.
Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to assist those with disabilities to take part in animal care/education program. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.
Johnson United Methodist Church: Seeking volunteers noon to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 22 to help sort through Christmas shoe boxes that will be shipped overseas to kids in other countries. Minimum age: 10.
Mothers Assisting Mothers: Volunteers needed to wrap gifts for Summit Mall patrons as a fundraising opportunity for the agency. Days/times vary. Volunteers must sign up for shift(s) by Nov. 16. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.
Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (Northfield): Volunteers needed daily to participate in recreation activities with clients. Minimum age: 18.
One of a Kind Pet Rescue: Volunteers needed weekday evenings and weekend days/evenings to perform data entry and assist with mailings. Minimum age: 18.
Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed Wednesday, Nov. 17 and Dec. 9 (hours vary) to assist with registering/signing up families seeking Christmas assistance. Minimum age: 17.
Summa Western Reserve Hospital (Cuyahoga Falls): Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to noon, a minimum of one four-hour shift a week, weekdays to assist with filing, copying and other office duties. Minimum age: 18.
Summa's Palliative Care and Hospice Services: Volunteers needed to make one dish or several dishes for a Thanksgiving meal and then serve on Thanksgiving Day to families with loved ones in the Acute Palliative Care Unit. Minimum age: 16, 10 with adult supervision.
Williard Food Pantry: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Nov. 24 to help assemble 150 to 200 Thanksgiving baskets or help with set-up the day before, 8 to 11 a.m. Nov. 23. Minimum age: 12, 10 with adult supervision.
