The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. Akron Urban League: Volunteers needed weekdays 3-7 p.m. for a minimum of 2 hours a week to tutor students grades 3-9 in mathematics. Volunteers will attend a four-hour tutor orientation and must pass a BCI/FBI background check. Volunteers should have two years of college, associate’s degree, or have passed a state paraprofessional academic assessment and have strong basic math skills.
American Red Cross Northern Ohio Blood Services: Volunteers are needed on a flexible schedule to support local blood drives and donor centers. Minimum age: 15; 10 with adult supervision.
Area Agency on Aging: Volunteer ombudsmen needed to visit residents in long-term care facilities and help address their concerns. Training required. Minimum age: 18.
Barberton Hospice & Palliative Care: Volunteers needed on a flexible basis to visit patients in their homes, nursing facilities and/or hospitals. Special need for male volunteers as well as for military veterans to support terminally ill veterans. Minimum age: 16.
Battered Women’s Shelter: Volunteers needed daily on a flexible schedule to assist with general needs. Also seeking movers to assist with large item donations. Minimum age: 18.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve: Volunteers needed 6-9 p.m. Feb. 18 to assist with a fundraising event. Tasks may include registration, greeting, ticket sales during event and displaying auction items. Minimum age: 18; 16 with adult supervision.
Cascade Locks Park Association: Volunteers needed weekdays to serve as tour and information guides for school-aged children. Minimum age: 18.
Christian Fellowship Basketball League: Volunteers needed 5:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, to help with coaching, physical fitness training, scoring, time keeping and officiating basketball games. Minimum age: 16; 13 with adult supervision.
Community Support Services: Volunteers needed at least 2 hours a week, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to review client files in order to gather client history for individuals being served by the agency’s crisis intervention program. Minimum age: 18.
Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to assist in packaging, shipping and office/clerical tasks. Minimum age: 18.
Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers needed 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays to help with the construction of homes. Minimum age: 18.
Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Companion volunteers are needed to pair up with a home housing four individuals with disabilities. Visits would happen primarily on evenings or weekends and volunteers are asked to serve a minimum of 2 hours per month doing recreational activities with individuals in that home. Minimum age: 18.
Laurel Lake Retirement Community (Hudson): Volunteers needed a minimum of 1 hour a week to oversee card games, bridge and/or rummy, and to assist residents as needed. Minimum age: 14.
Mobile Meals: Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays to deliver meals to people who are homebound and in nutritional need; special need for drivers in Cuyahoga Falls and Stow areas. Minimum age: 18; younger with adult supervision.
OPEN M: Seeking licensed podiatrists, dentists, medical massage therapists, pharmacists and registered nurses to volunteer at the agency clinic. Morning clinics held the third and fourth Thursday morning of each month from 8:45 a.m. to noon.
Paws and Prayers: Volunteers needed daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to clean cat cages, help with office tasks, wash floors, do laundry, and run errands, such as taking animals to vet offices and picking up animals from the pound. Minimum age: 18; 16 with adult supervision.
Portage Path Behavioral Health: Volunteers needed to assist in answering the 24-hour crisis intervention/suicide prevention hot line. Intensive 50-hour training and background check. Minimum age: 21.
Senior Independence Hospice: Volunteers needed at least 2 hours per week any day to provide companionship and emotional support to patients. Minimum age: 18.
Summa Health System: Volunteers needed from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays to call Internal Medicine patients to remind them of appointments and send reminder letters if patients cannot be reached by phone. Orientation provided. Minimum age: 18.
YMCA Voris Community Learning Center: Volunteers needed 6 to 9 p.m. weekdays to monitor learning center facility and participants. Minimum age: 18; 16 with adult supervision.
