Work will soon get under way on a new section of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in southern Summit County.
Haynes Construction of Norwalk has won a $569,960 contract to build the trail from Vanderhoof Road in New Franklin north about one mile to Van Buren Road in Barberton. The project includes a bridge over the Tuscarawas River.
The work should begin in the next 10 days or so, said David Whited, chief planner for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County.
The contract award was outlined on Wednesday to park commissioners.
In other news, Thomarios Construction of Akron won a $198,101 contract to build a 25-car parking lot at the western end of the Sand Run Jogging Trail. The work will include a restroom and a drinking fountain at Revere Road and Sand Run Parkway on the Fairlawn-Akron border.
Northstar Asphalt of Jackson Township got a $181,606 contract to repave parking lots and roads in the Oxbow and Chuckery areas of Cascade Valley Metro Park in North Akron. The park district's work is being funded by state road tax money from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The park district is also working with Split Rock Studios of Minneapolis to redesign the Seiberling Nature Realm on Smith Road in Akron.
The park system agreed to spend $16,604 on energy audits of the Nature Realm, the pavilion at Goodyear Heights Metro Park in East Akron and the administrative offices in West Akron. Closer Look Inspections will do the analysis.
The park commissioners agreed to hire the University of Akron to conduct an archaeological review of Munroe Falls Metro Park, including the neighboring 288 acres that were once part of the Summit County Home in Tallmadge. The review will cost $27,908.
They also agreed to work with Clinton Mayor Phyllis Mayberry to investigate converting two garages along the Towpath Trail in Clinton into small picnic shelters.
