Federal, state and area agencies collaborate to seize narcotics, vehicles and $84,000
By David Giffels Beacon Journal staff writer

CANTON: Ten people were arrested and drugs, cash and vehicles seized following what authorities called a wide-ranging drug investigation involving federal, state and local law officers.
The monthlong investigation led to numerous arrests, authorities said over the weekend.
Officers said the most significant was the apprehension of two men, Ernest Perez and Gilbert Ayala, both of San Antonio, Texas, after a sting operation. Authorities said they confiscated five kilos of cocaine being delivered to the Canton area.
The operation involved agents from the Canton police vice squad, Canton's Gang Task Force, the Canton office of the FBI, Massillon police, Jackson Township police and Stark County Metro.
In mid-September, authorities said, Canton vice squad officers and agents from the office of the Ohio Adult Parole Authority arrested a person involved in trafficking 4.5 ounces of cocaine, and seized another 4.5 ounces of cocaine and $25,000 cash during the arrest of another person.
In another sting, officers from seven agencies moved in on addresses in Jackson Township and Massillon. Authorities said they seized cocaine, $43,000 in cash and thousands of illegal narcotic pills.
Other investigations led to smaller amounts of drugs and money being confiscated, police said.
The total evidence seized was 8 kilos of cocaine, approximately $84,000 in cash, a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, a 2006 Chevrolet Impala, approximately 2,000 doses of Xanax, 2,800 Ecstasy pills, 1,500 doses of Valium, 3,500 oral steroid pills and 350 bottles of injectable steroids.
The operation also included the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, Stark Metro Narcotics, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Akron police and the Summit County Sheriff's Office's Narcotics Unit.
In a news release, Canton Police Chief Dean McKimm praised the cooperative spirit of the operation.
''I don't know when our area has witnessed such a collaboration of so many federal, state and local agencies working together in such a fast-paced, high-level drug operation such as this,'' he said. ''I would have to say that what we have here is a great example of 21st century cooperative policing where the good guys and the citizens throughout Stark County can certainly claim to be victors in this battle.''
