Road project closes gas station

Route 8 Marathon outlet with auto repair to be razed, may reopen in new site

By Kimberley Sirk
Special to the Beacon Journal

BOSTON HEIGHTS: Summit County motorists who travel state Route 8 have one fewer place to stop for fuel or refreshments.

Friday was the last day of business — at least for now — at the Boston Heights Marathon at East Hines Hill Road.

The business — a gas station and auto-repair shop — is being razed to make way for an access road for the state Route 8 project.

Owner Joe DiFranco has seen reduced traffic because of the massive Route 8 reconstruction project in northern Summit County. His business employed three people and was behind the Holiday Inn and across from the former Boston Hills Country Club.

DiFranco said the building faces the wrecking ball.

''I turned away at least 40 cars this morning,'' DiFranco said Friday. ''People wanted their gas or pop or candy they were used to getting here.''

One elderly customer, DiFranco said, burst into tears when she learned the 11-year-old business will be put on ice.

''I guess this is what we call progress,'' DiFranco said.

The business owner said his landlord, John Gillota Jr., is buying the Valley Tire building across Route 8. Until a new building is obtained, DiFranco said, he plans to store his auto-repair shop's equipment.

He said he hopes to reopen the car-repair part of his operation within two months, but reopening the gas station will take a bit longer to allow for installation of the necessary equipment and tanks.

In September, another gas station — the BP station at Boston Mills and Route 8 — also shut down.

The only remaining gas station in Boston Heights is at state Route 303 and Akron-Cleveland Road.
