Toledo woman is charged with fake abduction report

Police say she recanted story, drove self to Ga.

Associated Press

TOLEDO: A pregnant attorney who police said made up a story about being kidnapped and driven to Georgia was charged Friday with making false alarms.

Karyn McConnell Hancock, 35, met with police officials, who explained the misdemeanor charge to her. She is due to appear in court Dec. 27.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

A message seeking comment was left with Hancock's attorney, Jerry Phillips.

Hancock's husband said she had a ''meltdown'' and is seeking treatment.

She was reported missing Dec. 5 and was found three days later after she flagged down a motorist near Six Flags in Austell, Ga. Her car was found nearby.

She told authorities that a man with a gun abducted her outside a juvenile court building in downtown Toledo and forced her into the back of a van, police said.

Police said she recanted the story Monday after meeting with investigators for about eight hours.

Investigators said she drove by herself to the Atlanta area.

All she said was that she was tired and wanted to get away, said police detective Vince Mauro. She is six months pregnant with her second child.
