One Mass. resident and four from Ohio apply
Published on Tuesday, Jan 15, 2008
Beacon Journal staff report
The first five applicants have thrown their hats into the ring for the school superintendent's job in Akron.
The two superintendents, one doctoral student, one retired superintendent and one elementary school principal applied through the Ohio School Boards Association, which is handling the search for the district.
Since the deadline for applications isn't until Jan. 25, more candidates could surface.
The Akron district is seeking a replacement for Superintendent Sylvester Small, who is retiring July 31, after 38 years with the district.
By the time he retires, he will have spent seven years in the lead job — far beyond the average of 18 months to three years for urban superintendents.
The goal is to make an offer and negotiate a contract with Small's replacement during the week of Feb. 25.
Four out of the first five applicants already work in Ohio. The fifth is a school superintendent in Massachusetts.
As of Friday, the candidates were:
• Art Stellar, superintendent of Taunton Public Schools in Taunton, Mass.
• Romy Adams, doctoral candidate in education administration at Ashland University and principal in Lorain City Schools from 2005 to 2007.
• Thomas Binegar, elementary principal for two schools in the Belpre City School District in southeastern Ohio.
• Gary L. Norris, superintendent of Rolling Hills Local Schools in Senecaville in southeastern Ohio.
• Jerry Skiver, retired superintendent of New Boston Local Schools near Portsmouth.
The school district has contracted with the School Boards Association to handle the search for about $9,000; a private executive search firm might charge up to $60,000.
Akron district officials have promised a transparent search with plenty of time for the public to weigh in on candidates.
