GOP backs Widowfield over Heydorn

Summit Democrats endorse Pry over Finley in race for county executive

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

The Summit County Republican Party has endorsed state Rep. John Widowfield over Louise Heydorn, the only Republican incumbent on County Council.

Party Chairman Alex Arshinkoff said the party's executive committee found Widowfield to be more qualified than Heydorn.

''He's been a member of the legislature for four terms — that's pretty well qualified,'' Arshinkoff said of Widowfield, who is running for County Council in the March 4 primary, rather than defending his 42nd District House of Representatives seat.

This was one of several endorsements on contested primary races made Tuesday evening during meetings of the Summit County Republican and Democratic parties.

Heydorn, who since 1993 has represented council's District 3, which includes Hudson, Stow, Silver Lake and parts of Cuyahoga Falls, said she was disappointed but not surprised that she didn't get her party's backing.

''The only endorsement that counts is the one voters give at the ballot box,'' she said. ''I'm grateful for their past support and hope to get that support on March 4.''

The county Democratic Party's central committee overwhelmingly endorsed former county party Chairman Russ Pry over Joe Finley, a former Akron City councilman, for the county executive race. The vote was 154 to 3, with nine people choosing not to endorse.

''That shows the rank-and-file Democrats are behind Russ,'' said Wayne Jones, the county party's finance chair, who soon is expected to be tapped as party chairman.

The Democratic committee also endorsed Mary Margaret Rowlands for common pleas judge and John Quinn, the incumbent Summit County Domestic Relations judge.

The party's committee members in the 14th Congressional District endorsed Bill O'Neill for this congressional seat.

The county Republican Party's executive committee chose not to endorse for congressional contests.

The Republican committee's other endorsements were:
• Both Susan Poulos and William D. Wellemeyer, who will compete for judge of the 9th District Court of Appeals.
• Dennis L. Robart Jr. for the 42nd District Ohio House seat.
• Tom Parker for Summit County Common Pleas Court judge.
• Nancy Mercurio Morrison for Summit County prosecutor.

The party also recommended that Arshinkoff be reappointed to the Summit elections board.

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner will decide on board member appointments by early March. Each political party has two members on county elections boards.

The Summit County Democratic Party previously recommended that Tim Gorbach, a recent addition to the elections board, be reappointed.

Neither Summit county political party plans to endorse a presidential candidate.
