State of the City speech covers several points

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic told a standing-room-only crowd at his State of the City address Thursday that even into his sixth term, he still loves his job.
''I love Akron. . . . I am just as enthusiastic today as when I first set foot in City Hall 34 years ago as a 24-year-old councilman,'' he said.
Here are some of the points made in his address:
• The new Goodyear corporate building and Eastgate development will be the largest single development in the city's history, with public and private investment of nearly $1 billion.
• The city will make a proposal by April to attempt to keep the Bridgestone Firestone Technical Center in Akron.
• The city's 3-1-1 call center handled 200,000 calls in 2007.
• A new Neighborhood Nuisance Patrol program will be started, with four nuisance officers responsible for being on the lookout for junk cars, high weeds, loose trash and other zoning violations.
• An Akron office of the Neighborhood Assistance Corp. of America will be opened to provide relief for homeowners facing potential loss of their homes through foreclosure.
• The Akron Global Business Accelerator in Building 5 of the Goodrich tire complex is now home to 35 companies and 142 employees, and those companies have attracted more than $16 million in new investment capital in the past year.
• A biomedical incubator will be planned to provide jobs at new companies growing out of the research and development within the Biomedical Corridor.
• A new Mayor's Small Business Center will be started next week to assist small businesses with problems. Call 330-375-2200 for assistance.
• Work will begin this spring on ''The Bowery'' development on South Main Street at Lock 4 behind the Civic Theater, with new shops, restaurants and 70 apartments.
• The LeBron James Bikeathon will be held this year on June 21.
