Snowfall, precipitation could surpass amounts reached in 1910, 1893

Mother Nature might soon make February a month for the ages.
But will there be an asterisk beside the record?
It is possible that this month will go down in the history books, but will it be a legitimate record?
With a forecast of the possibility of 3 to 6 inches of snow today and a high of 36 degrees, it appears that February could break two nasty weather records for most snowfall and most precipitation for the month.
As of Thursday, 23.2 inches of snow had fallen during the month, the second largest snowfall amount for February in recorded history at the Akron-Canton Airport.
The most snow to ever be recorded for the Akron area during February occurred in 1910, when 25.3 inches fell during the month.
With all of the snow, to this point, February also has recorded the second largest amount of precipitation ever 5.51 inches.
The most precipitation ever recorded for a February was 5.79
inches in 1893.
But if more than 2.1 inches of snow and more than .28 inches of precipitation falls on Leap Day, will there have to be an asterisk next to the record because the record was broken on the month's extra day?
No asterisk will be needed, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Randel in Cleveland.
''February is February,'' he said, whether it is February with 28 days or February with 29 days.
''It doesn't matter,'' he said, acknowledging that it is possible, based on the forecast, that the records could be broken today.
The good news is that March begins Saturday and there is no snow in the forecast for the weekend.
The weather service says it will be partly sunny and breezy Saturday with a high of 29.
Sunday, the weather service said, will not be as cold, with periods of sun and a high of 41.
Rain is expected Monday night, when the temperature will climb to 45.
