Barberton school board to narrow candidate field, conduct interviews in April

The Barberton school district's search for a superintendent has attracted 25 applicants.
There are no internal candidates, and no current superintendents from other districts in Summit County have applied, Barberton Treasurer Ryan Pendleton said Tuesday.
The deadline for applying was Friday.
School board members plan to interview candidates in April, after narrowing the field. Board members hope to make a decision by May 1.
Community members and district employees are meeting with a search consultant, Jack Marsick, to develop questions that will be asked in the interviews.
Marsick will receive $5,000 to help with the search.
The new superintendent will oversee a $76 million districtwide construction project.
Barberton voters on March 4 approved a bond issue that will pay for about 40 percent of the cost. The state will pay about 60 percent.
The district plans to construct one elementary school, convert U.L. Light Middle School to an elementary, build a middle school near the high school and renovate other buildings.
The five-year plan involves demolishing Norton Homes, a 170-unit complex operated by the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority.
Elizabeth J. Lolli retired as Barberton superintendent last year. Her annual base salary was $118,000.
She is now superintendent of Monroe Local Schools in southwestern Ohio.
She had been superintendent in Barberton since August 2003.
Vincent Frammartino, former Tallmadge school chief, is Barberton's interim superintendent.
Among the candidates are chiefs of two districts in Portage County: Joe Iacano, superintendent of Crestwood schools, and David Redd, superintendent of Field schools.
Also applying were Walter Calinger, superintendent of Richmond Heights schools and former superintendent of Norton schools, and David Macali, former superintendent of Green schools.
Barberton has about 4,000 students.
