• Elaine Letz of Copley was selected as a semifinalist for the 24th annual AQS Quilt Show and Contest at the Paducah Expo Center in Paducah, Ky.
School news
• Two students at Kent State won awards in the Hearst Photo Competition. David Foster won ninth place and Gavin Johnson, 18th place.
• Jacquie Marino, an assistant professor of magazine journalism at Kent State, received the Gold Eddie Award from Folio magazine for her article, Blood Brothers, in Cleveland Magazine in June 2006.
• Freshman Marisa Wintrow of Akron is costume head in the Orchesis production The Photographer at Ohio Wesleyan University.
• Amanda Hermann of Akron finished second in the National Society of Arts and Letters, Ohio River Valley Chapter, voice competition. She is working for her master of vocal performance at the University of Akron.
• Several Kent State students won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. First-place awards went to James Everetts, Christopher Sharron, the CyBurr Web staff, the Web site staff and the TV2 staff. Second-place awards went to Elise Franso, Kyle Miller, Sharron, the Black Squirrel Radio staff and the Burr magazine staff. Third-place awards went to Steven Bushong, Jill Byerly, Kyle Miller, the Daily Kent Stater newspaper staff and the UHURU magazine staff.
• Jeffrey Steiner of Creston was selected to participate in the 2008 Juried Student Exhibition at Ashland University's Coburn Gallery. He is exhibiting an untitled, mixed media and found object piece.
• The University of Akron robotics team tied for first place in the Student Robotics Space Elevator Competition at the Earth and Space Conference in Long Beach, Calif. Team captain was Courtney Gras.
• Joan Clinefelter, professor of European history at the University of Colorado, received a $6,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant for summer research. She is a 1979 graduate of Firestone High School.
• University of Akron law students took top honors at the 2008 American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Regional Competition. The team won first and second place at the tournament. The regional champions were Ryan Melewski of Youngstown and Mallory Sander of Columbus, along with witnesses Bryan Smith of Stow and Beki Blackson of Warren. John Ramsey of Huron and John Conley of Canton with witnesses David Oeschger of Akron and Samantha Prokop of Medina were regional runners-up.
• The Akron East High Alumni Association is inducting these graduates into its Luther D. Smith Hall of Fame: Donald Artis, class of '45, Outstanding Achievement in Business; Kiki Bambakidis Hellman, class of '51, Outstanding Achievement as Senior Research Scientist; Dr. Dennis Bentley, class of '92, Outstanding Achievement in Medicine; Dr. Kenneth R. Holloman, class of '51, Outstanding Achievement in Medicine; Mary Lou Usery White, class of '51, Outstanding Achievement in Children's Literature; and Michael E. Woods, class of '70, Outstanding Achievement in Music.
• An associate professor of audiology at the University of Akron has been selected to receive the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Academy of Audiology. Kristina English, who is president elect of the academy, lives in Akron.
Military news
• Air Force Airman Jaqynne L. Diamond, daughter of Raeshion Diamond of Alliance, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2007 graduate of Alliance High School.
• Michael Beitenman, son of Charlie Beitenman and Sherry Hepher, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
• Army Pvt. Nicole M. Randall, daughter of Larry Randall of East Cleveland and sister of Sabrina Crawford of Twinsburg, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 2004 graduate of Shaw High School, East Cleveland.
• Air Force Airman Joseph E. Williams, son of Laura Williams of Louisville, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Louisville High School.
• Christopher Csonka, son of Laura and John Csonka, graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Training at Parris Island, S.C. He graduated from Norton High in 2007.
• Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Robert E. Seymour of Brimfield was named Marine of the Quarter while serving in Iraq. He is a graduate of Field High School.
