Community news
• The Bath-Richfield Kiwanis Club chartered an Aktion Club for adults with developmental disabilities. President of the new club is Chris Brouse of Barberton; Mike Busch of Richfield is vice president; Dana Meissner of Akron is treasurer; and Mary Anne Hibinger of Ravenna is secretary. This Kiwanis chapter is one of 200 in seven countries for people with disabilities.
• Joe Prelop of Akron is the Star Volunteer for March for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County. He was honored for his photography, which has been used in the park publications, desk calendars, exhibits and banners. He also volunteers daily for the Trail Patrol.
• Thomas G. Knoll, founding partner with Stark & Knoll Co. LPA, received the H. Peter Burg Award at the Greater Akron Chamber's 2008 annual meeting. The award recognizes a local business leader who has served as a role model to enhance local and regional economic and community development.
• The following Massillon District Ohio State Highway Patrol employees have been honored. Trooper Charles R. Abbuhl, Wooster Post, was named District Trooper of the Year; Dispatcher Robin S. Case, Medina Post, District Dispatcher of the Year; Trooper Kevin D. Weber, Massillon District Headquarters, District Trooper recognition; and Gina D. Ocendorf, secretary, Massillon District Headquarters, District Employee recognition.
• Several Akron-area residents were honored at the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers Region II: Debra Manteghi, as Social Worker of the Year; James Stilson, Lifetime Achievement; Willette Riley, Outstanding Service; Akron Mayor Donald Plusquellic, Public Elected Official of the Year; Andrea Wlaszyn, Public Citizen of the Year; Tim Edgar, Master's Degree Student of the Year; and Scott Brinkman, Bachelor's Degree Student of the Year.
School news
• Robert A. Walker, chair of the Department of Computer Science at Kent State, will receive the 2008 Outstanding Contribution to the Association for Computing Machinery Award. The 82,000-member association, in existence since 1947, promotes the computing field as a science and profession.
• Akron native Joshua Marcin, a junior at John Carroll University, was named one of 65 Truman Scholars for 2008. Marcin, a double major in political science and Spanish, was selected from among 595 applicants nationwide. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation annually provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service, plus help in career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions and professional development.
• Katlyn Porter, a sophomore at Kenmore High School, and Christina Stembridge, a senior at Firestone High School, were selected to represent their high schools in the Summit-Portage LEADER Institute held at Tallmadge High School. They were among 19 young women from high schools in Summit and Portage conties to take part in the six-session leadership training program.
• The Northeast Ohio chapter of the Financial Executives International recognized University of Akron student Karl Geyer of Parma for academic excellence.
• Elizabeth Luckenbaugh, a sophomore at Our Lady of the Elms in Akron, was one of 40 students from around the state to receive an Ohio Knights of Columbus Scholarship.
• Russell Chaboudy, superintendent of the Coventry Local Schools, is among 30 superintendents around the state taking part in the 23rd Ohio School Leadership Institute. The institute consists of 21 classes conducted during the 2008-09 school year.
• Amanda T. Quan, a law student at the University of Akron, received the third annual Diversity Scholarship from Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs. The scholarship is a $5,000 cash award and a paid clerkship in the firm's Akron office this summer.
• Jeff Kilmer received the 2008 Homer B. Smith Teacher of Excellence award from the Medina County Schools' Educational Service Center and the Cloverleaf Board of Education. Kilmer is a social studies teacher in the Cloverleaf district.
Military news
• Navy Seaman Apprentice Paul B. Grissom, son of Vickie A. Lansberry of Tallmadge and David J. Grissom of Barnesville, Ohio, was promoted to his current rank upon graduation from Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1999 graduate of Waterloo High School in Atwater.
• Army Pvt. Christopher W. Wells, nephew of Patrica Perry of Massillon, graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is a 2007 graduate of Hollywood Hills High School, Hollywood, Fla.
