Vandalism closes North High

Police arrest suspect in gym at 2:30 a.m. Classes to resume today

By Beacon Journal staff report

A North High student has been charged with vandalism after a trophy case was smashed, windows were broken and a trash can was set on fire at the Akron school.

Classes were canceled Monday because of the damage, North High Principal Addie Veasley said.

There were ''broken windows throughout the building,'' said school district spokeswoman Karen Ingraham. ''There was enough broken glass that they needed to do major cleanup before students could be permitted into the building.''

Police arrested a 10th-grader around 2:30 a.m. Monday in the school's gym.

The boy, 17, was charged with breaking and entering, vandalism, arson and resisting arrest.

Lt. Rick Edwards, police spokesman, said the teen fought with police trying to take him into custody.

He was being held at the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

Edwards said police first responded to an alarm at the school on Gorge Boulevard at 3:20 a.m. Sunday.

Officers initially saw that a glass door had been broken out. When they went inside the building, they saw that a first-floor trophy case had been smashed and that glass panes on seven doors had been broken. Several trash cans had been turned over.

Police returned to the school around 2:30 a.m. Monday. This time, they saw that glass had been broken on a north side window. Inside, several windows were broken and a plastic trash can had been set on fire.

Veasley said dishes were smashed in an area of the school known as the Viking Room.

Veasley and school security personnel were reviewing tape of the incident, which was captured by security cameras.

Veasley said the school would reopen at its normal time today.
