Wisdom volumes to debut on Sunday

New book reproduction of 'Saint John's Bible'

By Colette M. Jenkins
Beacon Journal religion writer

A full-color reproduction of the Wisdom Books from The Saint John's Bible will debut from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at John Carroll University, 20700 N. Park Blvd. in University Heights.

The Wisdom Books, which contains 24 illuminations and 102 pages, is the first of seven volumes in The Saint John's Bible, the only handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned in more than 500 years. The Wisdom volumes include the Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes and Proverbs.

This Bible, itself, is the work of world-renowned calligrapher and illuminator Donald Jackson, who collaborated with scribes, artists and theologians. It was conceived to be an expression of faith relevant to the modern world, illustrating scripture from a contemporary perspective. It incorporates imagery from eastern and western religions and Native American culture.

The Wisdom Books are a gift to John Carroll from Saint John's Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minn., through a gift from Target in honor of its retired executive vice president, John Pellegrine, a John Carroll alumnus.

Sunday's debut in the O'Connell Reading Room of the Dolan Center for Science and Technology will include original illuminations from The Saint John's Bible. The event will also feature a documentary on the creation of the Bible and a presentation about manuscripts from Joseph Kelly, professor of religious studies at John Carroll.

When complete, the permanent display at John Carroll will include the seven distinct volumes of The Saint John's Bible: Gospels and Acts; Pentateuch; Psalms; Prophets; Wisdom Books; Historical Books and Letters; and Revelation Wisdom Books. The reproduction is valued at $1 million.
