The new science, math and technology middle school at a glance:
WHAT IS IT? A $14.5 million middle school with 500 children in fifth grade through eighth grade. It will be attached to the National Inventors Hall of Fame near the University of Akron.
WHEN DOES IT OPEN? Fall 2009. All four grades could open simultaneously or be phased in, depending on construction conditions. After April 26, the museum will be closed for construction.
WHO CAN ATTEND? Families must apply and express an interest in math, science and technology. Students will be selected by lottery. Composition will be 80 percent from Akron and up to 20 percent from outside Akron. The school is aiming for a student population representative of the whole district.
HOW WILL DRAWING THE MOST MOTIVATED STUDENTS AND PARENTS AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE OTHER MIDDLE SCHOOLS? Officials say that the practices perfected in the new school will be incorporated in all the middle schools.
HOW WILL IT BE SPECIAL? Everything from construction to curriculum will incorporate research-based best practices for education. The school will be wireless and students will have some form of laptop computer or tablet that will work anywhere in the building and can be taken home. Sophisticated computers will be available for engineering, robotics, computer-assisted drafting and other uses. Students will have access to visiting professors from the University of Akron and inventors-in-residence.
SPECIAL MENTION Environmentally friendly construction might qualify the school for a silver rating in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) national rating system promoted by the U.S. Green Building Council.
