Fire destroys man's food, clothing

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

An Akron man featured in a recent Beacon Journal article about violent crimes against the homeless has again been targeted.

Lenny King, who lives under a short bridge spanning an abandoned railroad grade underneath a downtown street, has been the victim of numerous attacks, including one in which both he and his belongings were set on fire.

Just after 5 p.m. Thursday, Akron police and firefighters responded to multiple calls about another fire at King's makeshift home.

One caller told dispatchers: ''They're trying to blow up Lenny!''

This time, King wasn't injured, but the small fire destroyed the used carpet, food and clothing that made up his belongings.

As in the past, King refused officers' offers to take him to Haven of Rest, Akron's homeless shelter.

''Some people are homeless because they want to be homeless,'' said Lt. Rick Edwards, the Akron police spokesman. ''It's unfortunate to be preying on people like that.''
