Ohio's Third Frontier Commission on Tuesday awarded multi-million dollar grants to help several Northeast Ohio universities recruit world-class researchers to the region.
A partnership between Kent State University and Case Western Reserve University is getting $14.4 million from a new Ohio Research Scholars Program. The grant money will help to establish a research cluster related to liquid crystals.
Kent State will get two endowed research scholar positions, and Case will receive one.
Another partnership led by Ohio State University with the universities of Akron and Dayton won $18.2 million for a materials development research cluster. UA will get one endowed position through that initiative, approved on Tuesday by the Third Frontier Commission.
In addition, UA and the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy were awarded nearly $8.6 million to recruit two scholars to the region for orthopedic-related research.
All the awards are contingent on State Controlling Board approval.
The regional projects were among 10 collaborations statewide to win a total of more than $143 million for help luring researchers to Ohio.
Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut called the Ohio Research Scholars program initiative a ''huge vote of confidence and shot in the arm for our research capacity in the state of Ohio.''
Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher said the grant program ''is directly tied to our economic development strategy'' of developing jobs in the areas of advanced materials, biosciences, information technology, aerospace and other emerging industries.
