• Akron-Canton area winners of the Kids Speak Out essay contest sponsored by WVIZ/PBS ideastream and Time Warner Cable Northeast Ohio were: Whitney Porter of Akron's St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and Jenna Baisden of Perry High School. Honorable mention awards went to Alexandra Horning of St. Vincent-St. Mary, Alex Marzullo of Hudson High and LaTesia Conley of Massillon Washington High School.
• RyanAustin Dennis, a senior at Copley High School, was a 2008 finalist of Slam U, the annual series of free poetry workshops and slams for teens sponsored by Playhouse Square. He is part of Cleveland's National Youth Poetry Slam Team.

• Julie Messing, director of Kent State's Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation, received the Paul L. Pfeiffer Professional and Creative Teaching Award and the annual teaching Award from the College of Business Administration and Graduate School of Management.
• The Alumni Association at the University of Akron Wayne College recognized Dr. Marchelle Suppan with its Distinguished Alumni Award for 2008. He is a senior vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at Dunlap Community Hospital.
• The Alumni Association of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron gave its Father Thomas F. Mahar Outstanding Alumni Award to Jack Fitzpatrick, Class of '44; Thomas Jesser, Class of '53; Patrick Verderico, Class of '61; Thomas Stecz, Class of '65; Kevin McDonald, Class of '71; and Kathleen Roman Michel, Class of '81. Albert Letta, Jerry Kelly and Hank Mancino received Irish Crusader Awards as honorary alumni.
• Mount Union College named Ronald Mendel, assistant professor of human performance and sport management, as its 2008 Great Teacher. Mendel has been a member of the Mount Union faculty since 2004.
Military news
• Air Force Airman Vincent Taylor II, son of Vincent and Nellie Taylor of Akron, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Central-Hower High School in Akron.
• Air Force Airman Justin J. Derush, son of Heather Campbell of Wooster, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Wooster High School.
• Air Force Airman Ron Angelo S. Tate, son of Yvonne Tate of Cleveland and Ronnie Richmond of Munroe Falls, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
