Candidate to run
in 5.25-mile race
CHAGRIN FALLS: Bill O'Neill, the Democratic candidate for the 14th Congressional District who underwent bypass surgery in March, will run a 5.25-mile race Sunday, the Blossom Time Run in Chagrin Falls.

After O'Neill's surgery, he missed about four weeks on the campaign trail but returned to full-time campaigning earlier this month. He also resumed his job as a registered nurse at Hillcrest Hospital, where his heart surgery was performed.

''My goal is just to finish before they take down the timer,'' O'Neill said in a news release. O'Neill, 60, a retired appeals judge, lives in South Russell in Geauga County. He was the easy winner in the March 4 primary election, in which he squared off against two Democrats for the right to challenge U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette, a Republican, on Nov. 4.

The district covers all of Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties and parts of Summit, Portage, Cuyahoga and Trumbull counties.

PORTAGE COUNTY

Holiday fire destroys
Route 43 restaurant
FRANKLIN TWP.: A restaurant along Twin Lakes in Portage County was gutted by an early morning fire Monday.

Kent Fire Capt. Chuck Palmer said the two-story building that has hosted a variety of restaurants over the years at 7289 State Route 43 is a total loss.

Damage to the Mangiamo! restaurant has been estimated at $387,000.

''It was going pretty good when we pulled up,'' Palmer said. ''The front of the restaurant was fully involved.''

There was no one inside when the fire was reported by a passing motorist about 5 a.m. Monday.

Sixteen neighboring fire departments were called to the scene to bring water via tanker trucks. There are no fire hydrants near the restaurant.

Firefighters remained at the scene until noon.

Palmer said it appears the fire started in the front area of the building, but the exact location and cause were under investigation by Kent firefighters and members of the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office.

The building, a former barn, had housed the Rusty Nail, Black Squirrel and other restaurants over several decades.
