Firefighters treated for heat exhaustion
AKRON: Two Akron firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion Sunday morning after battling a fire at a vacant house in the 900 block of McKinley Avenue.
Firefighters responded shortly after 10:30 a.m. and discovered heavy smoke.
The two injured firefighters were treated at an area hospital and released, according to a fire department official.
The cause and damage estimate were not available Sunday.
Trail route in Flats is topic of meeting
CLEVELAND: Routing the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail through the industrialized Flats area will be the subject of a June 17 public meeting from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Widows on the World Building at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
The preferred trail alignment from Harvard Avenue to the Steelyard Commons commercial development will be outlined.
The meeting is sponsored by the city of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks, the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, the Cuyahoga County Engineer, Ohio Department of Transportation, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Ohio Canal Corridor.
AROUND OHIO
Traffic lights go green, reduce gases
CLEVELAND: Officials across northeast Ohio are synchronizing traffic lights and updating truck stops in an attempt to wipe out vehicle idling, a habit that scientists say spews greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency — whose slogan is ''Be Idle-Free! Turn off the key'' — coordinates stoplight projects to streamline traffic and limit waiting.
NOACA plans to synchronize lights on two major streets in Lakewood, and updates are planned for Eastlake, Avon and Brunswick. Federal grants aimed at reducing congestion and improving air quality will fund the projects.
Banned game is back in Cleveland
CLEVELAND: Tic-Tac-Fruit, a gaming machine banned by the state in a gambling crackdown, has returned to Cleveland bars — only this time, winners are taking home gas cards as prizes.
Bar owners, who received the machines about six weeks ago, say vendors have assured them the machines are legal.
But the Ohio Department of Public Safety has issued citations through the state to liquor establishments that give away cash, gift cards or gasoline cards to winners, said Matt Lampke, assistant Ohio Attorney General.
A bill passed by the state legislature in October tightened loopholes in a gambling regulation that had allowed touch-screen games of skill to pay off in cash.
