CANTON Injured officer
out of intensive care
CANTON: The Canton police officer attacked by a man with a baseball bat at a Wal-Mart store Sunday remains in the hospital, but is conscious and out of intensive care, Canton City Prosecutor Frank Forchione said.
Patrolman John Clark, 58, a 25-year veteran with the department, was hurt after he responded to a call about a man causing trouble at the Tuscarawas Street West store.
Police said David Carter, 23, of Canton, grabbed a baseball bat from the store's sporting goods department and struck Clark in the face, then struck him a second time.
Carter was arrested about a block from the store. Charges against him include felonious assault on a police officer.
CUYAHOGA FALLS Council won't seek
Cochran Road grant
CUYAHOGA FALLS: The city will not apply for a state grant to rebuild Cochran Road.
The Cuyahoga Falls City Council on Monday rejected a resolution needed to file the application.
Cochran Road residents voiced their opposition to the project, which would have resulted in assessments.
Ward 5 Councilwoman Diana Colavecchio, who sided with her constituents, said the project would have meant a financial hardship for residents.

JACKSON TWP. Truck driver crashes
after having seizure
JACKSON TWP.: A truck driver who suffered an apparent seizure traveled several miles north on Interstate 77 Tuesday afternoon before crashing just south of the Shuffel Road exit.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that the driver, Thomas A. Edison, of Milton, Pa., was hauling a truck full of rugs when he apparently suffered a seizure around 5 p.m.
Edison lost control of the truck near the Westfield Belden Village Mall.
The truck left the interstate and went into the grass. It struck several barriers over a span of three miles before crashing into a traffic barrier.
He was taken to Canton's Mercy Medical Center for treatment.
Although a medical ailment may be the cause, the patrol says the driver may still be charged with a traffic violation.

PIKE TWP. EPA cites landfill
for runoff problems
PIKE TWP.: The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has cited a Stark County landfill for continued leachate or liquid runoff problems.
The notice of violation against the Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility was dated June 11 and was released last week.
The illegal liquid runoff was noticed on a May 20 inspection by EPA staffer Ed Gortner and the agency's expert consultant, Dr. Timothy D. Stark of Stark Consultants Inc.
They observed several areas of leachate seeps and several pools of liquid that had escaped from the 258-acre landfill. Failure to control leachate is a violation of Ohio law and can result in a fine.
The landfill owner-operator, Republic Services Inc., later submitted photographs showing efforts to correct the problems. But the EPA has not determined whether the problems have been properly fixed, the agency said.
