Hydrant flushing set
for Mogadore today
AKRON: The Akron Water Department will flush fire hydrants in Mogadore beginning today and in East Akron beginning Wednesday.
The department will flush hydrants from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly.
Water users are urged to check their cold water for discoloration. If discoloration is found, they are advised to discontinue use until the water clears.
A nightly update on streets that are being flushed is available by calling 330-375-2554 and selecting ''frequently asked questions.'' An update can also be found at http://www.ci.akron.oh.us under news releases.
Fundraiser to help
cancer patient
CANTON: A fundraiser for Mark Bowen is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Arlington Avenue Church of God, 142 Arlington Ave. N.W.
Bowen, 46, of Akron, has been diagnosed with lung cancer, which is in stage four. His church is raising money to help his family.
The former drug addict and recovering alcoholic has spent five years volunteering at schools and detention centers to warn teens about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
The church program will feature local singers and refreshments. Proceeds will benefit Bowen's family.

help with electric bill
AKRON: Akron Summit Community Action Inc. will begin accepting applications for assistance with electric bills on Tuesday.
The federally funded Summer Crisis Program will end when funds are exhausted, or no later than Aug. 29. Because of the increased help given to people for heating their homes last winter, the summer program has been scaled back.
Financial assistance is limited to a one-time electric bill payment not to exceed $100 per income-eligible household. No air conditioners will be issued this summer.

Steam fest planned
on scenic railroad
PENINSULA: The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad will host a steam locomotive with train rides and a festival Sept. 24-28.
The event will include the Steam Festival from 3 to 8 p.m. Sept. 24-25 at Howe Meadow in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The meadow is off Riverview Road in Cuyahoga Falls.
There will be a model train display, photos with the engineer, costumed characters, historic games, a gift shop, photo run-bys and more.
Festival tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for kids 3 to 12. A ride on the steam-powered train will be an additional $15 for adults and $12 for children.
In addition, there will be a steam excursion through the Cuyahoga Valley at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sept. 27 and at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 28 from the Rockside Station in Independence. Prices vary.
A steam excursion to celebrate the railroad's 35th anniversary will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 from the Rockside Station.

to close for 3 weeks
AKRON: A section of Sand Run Parkway will be closed to traffic for three weeks starting Monday.
The road will be closed for a culvert repair in Sand Run Metro Park between Revere Road and the parking lot at 2400 Sand Run Parkway, said Metro Parks, Serving Summit County.
The parking lot will remain accessible but only to eastbound traffic.
