County wants to spread word about change for absentees

Summit County elections board officials know that having absentee voting at a different location this fall probably will confuse voters.
So, in hopes of better explaining the change, the board will have voter education booths at many local events this summer, including this weekend's Rib, White & Blue Festival in downtown Akron and Rockin on the River in Cuyahoga Falls.
''We want to make people more aware,'' said Marijean Donofrio, the board's director. ''It's a good opportunity to give people any information they need.''
The board recently voted to have absentee voting for the Nov. 4 election at the Job Center, a county building at 1040 E. Tallmadge Ave. in Akron, rather than at the board's Grant Street location. The change is being made in hopes of avoiding the long lines and traffic snarls that happened at the board office in the days leading to the March primary.
This November will be the first presidential election since a change in state law that allowed anyone to vote absentee for any reason. Absentee voting can be done either by mail or in person,
though elections boards are permitted to have the voting only at one location.
Absentee voting for the November election will begin Sept. 30.
Besides absentee voting, the voter education booths will provide information about registration and being a booth worker, Donofrio said.
The local events where booths are or will be set up include:
• Today, Rib, White & Blue Festival.
• July 12, Lock 3 Live!, Lock 3, downtown Akron.
• July 18, Rockin on the River.
• July 22 to 27, Summit County Fair, county fairgrounds, Tallmadge.
• July 26, Community Outreach Festival, Akron Alliance Fellowship Church, Akron; and Lock 3 Live!
