Eagles thriving in Ohio

Number of eaglets, nests higher than ever

By Bob Downing
Beacon Journal staff writer

It's a record year for bald eagles in Ohio.

A record number of eaglets have hatched from a record number of nests, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife.

This year also marks the 21st successive one in which the number of resident bald eagles has grown, with their territories expanding, the wildlife division said.

Of 2008's 184 nests, 119 were known to be successful in producing eaglets. At 16 other nests, wildlife biologists were unable to determine whether eaglets hatched.

By the latest estimate, Ohio had 222 eaglets in 43 counties, surpassing the 2006 record of 206 eaglets, the wildlife division said.

At least 203 of the eaglets already have fledged, or flown off on their own.

Last year, Ohio had 164 eagle nests, with 155 of those nests producing 194 eaglets.

Active nests in the Akron-Canton area include one in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Brecksville, one at Tinkers Creek in Aurora, one near Lake Rockwell north of Kent, one on Breakneck Creek between Kent and Ravenna, one at Killbuck Marsh near Shreve and one at Walborn Reservoir in Stark County's Marlboro Township.

Eagles are found in the largest numbers in Lake Erie wetlands, but the birds are moving in increasing numbers to inland locations.

Ohio has 21 new nests in 18 counties this year. Northeast Ohio counties with new nests are Ashland, Columbiana, Geauga, Lorain, Mahoning, Richland and Trumbull.

In 1979, there were only four bald eagle nests in the state. The number of bald eagles has grown as the environment has gotten cleaner.

The bald eagle is listed as a threatened species in Ohio.
