The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or http://www.uwsummit.org.
The following organizations need volunteers:
All American Soap Box Derby: Volunteer Courtesy Drivers needed July 22-27 to shuttle derby families around the Akron area during Soap Box Derby week. Vehicles provided. Minimum age: 25.
Arc of Summit & Portage Counties: Volunteers wanted to help staff with coordinating special events and grant writing. Minimum age: 18.
City of Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed July 24-27 to help with the Akron Arts Expo. Minimum age: 17, 15 with adult supervision.
Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital, Summa Health System: Volunteers needed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to photocopy charts. Minimum age: 15.
Girl Scouts of North East Ohio: Volunteers wanted to serve as teen advisers or guest speakers. Minimum age: 18.
Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers needed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to help those with disabilities to take part in animal care/education program. Minimum age: 16, 14 with adult supervision.
JC's Place (Johnson United Methodist Church): Volunteers needed to help hang art, display clothing, toys and household items for those in need. Minimum age: 15, 10 with adult supervision.
Laurel Lake Retirement Community: Volunteers wanted weekday mornings and afternoons to help residents use exercise equipment. Minimum age: 18.
Library Shop on Main: Volunteers wanted on a flexible basis to help with sales, restocking/shelving and customer service. Minimum age: 18.
National MS Society: Volunteers wanted from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays to help with craft classes. Minimum age: 18.
Neighborhood Conservation Services of Barberton: Volunteers needed to help paint homes of elderly/disabled residents for annual Paint Your Heart Out event, Saturday, July 26. Minimum age: 13, younger with supervision.
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Corrections/Oriana House: Volunteers wanted to attend a support and mentoring group for ex-offenders from 3 to 5 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Minimum age: 18.
On a Mission to Manhood: Volunteers needed to mentor males ages 16-22 in a classroom setting Tuesdays through Thursdays, mornings/early afternoons. Minimum age: 18.
Pregnancy Care of Summit County: Volunteers wanted weekdays to help staff interview clients, teach classes, office/clerical, speaking engagements, etc. Minimum age: 18.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP): Volunteers needed to phone and check on individuals who live alone and need daily contact. Minimum age: 55.
Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers wanted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and/or Thursdays to help in gift shop. Minimum age: 21.
Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed on a 24-hour, on-call basis to help coordinate responses to local emergencies (fires, power outages, etc.). Minimum age: 21.
Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron: Volunteers needed Aug. 10-15 for the JCC Maccabi Games, an international Olympic-style event for Jewish teens. Minimum age: 16.
Summit County Historical Society: Volunteer tour guides wanted from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays to guide guests throughout museum. Minimum age: 16.
Written Communication Radio Service (WCRS): Volunteers needed daily to read printed materials on radio broadcast to visually impaired/physically disabled individuals. Minimum age: 18.
Holden seeks volunteers
The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland is accepting applications for volunteers for the fall months. Needed are school guides and guides in the Volunteer Interpreter Program. Volunteers receive training on Holden gardens and collections. Training sessions begin in August. For more information, contact Stefanie Galbreath, volunteer coordinator, at 440-946-4400, Ext. 157.
