Howe House arrives
at final destination
AKRON: Akron's historic Howe House has finally reached its new home.
Workers from the Euclid-based AA House Movers early Saturday morning successfully rotated the building 90 degrees and positioned it atop a foundation off West Exchange and Water streets, next to the Ohio & Erie Canal.
On June 30, the 1836 building was moved two blocks along Exchange Street. On Friday, it was moved about 250 feet by remote control across Water Street.
The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition intends to use the Howe House as its headquarters, visitor center and community meeting place.
Rep. Sutton to lead
congressional class
U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Twp., who represents the 13th district, was chosen president of the 49-member congressional class of 2006.
''I am honored to have been selected by my colleagues to lead the freshman class, particularly as we approach one of the most critical elections in recent history,'' Sutton said in a news release.
The class meets weekly with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to discuss policy initiatives, strategy and direction.
Akron police to ride
10 new black bikes
AKRON: Akron police have the Lebron James Family Foundation and the Cannondale Bicycle Co. to thank for 10 new bikes.
The bikes were presented to the department this week at the Akron Urban League.
The Cannondale bikes are designed especially for law enforcement. They are jet black with gold lettering. Each is affixed with a King James logo.
Akron's community police officers will use the bikes to patrol neighborhoods throughout the city.

Free zoo admission
for area residents
CLEVELAND: Summit County residents will get free admission Wednesday at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
In addition, Portage County residents will be admitted free on July 30 and Medina County residents on Aug. 13.
The offer is for the zoo only; admission to the RainForest building will be $5 a person.
Non-Cuyahoga County residents are asked to bring a valid photo ID with current address or a current utility bill with another form of identification.
Admission is usually $10 for adults and $6 for children 2 to 11, and includes the zoo and the RainForest building.
The zoo is at 3900 Wildlife Way on Cleveland's west side.

BATH TWP.: The Bath Community Activity Center, 1615 N. Cleveland-Massillon Road, will be the site for a free Concert/Movie Night July 31.
At 7 p.m., the 12-piece ensemble, Tony Fortunato and the Emperors of Swing, will entertain with jazz and rhythm and blues.
At 9:15 p.m., Bath Township will host a Movie in the Park, showing Safety Last, a 1923 silent movie, slapstick comedy starring Harold Lloyd and featuring live organ music by Jerry Bronko of the Akron Civic Theater.

Center aims to help
children of military
AKRON: A free one-day program aimed at helping children of members of the military will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 2 at Greenleaf Family Center, 212 E. Exchange St., Akron.
The goal is to help young people deal with the stress and emotions of having a relative in the service.
Melissa Marshall-Allen, a counselor at Greenleaf, and other counselors, will lead the group. Preregistration is required by calling 330-376-9494, Ext. 259.
Village will install
rain garden July 26
LAKEMORE: The village of Lakemore will install a rain garden July 26 at Village Hall.
The installation will begin at 8 a.m. and will be part of a rain garden workshop at Village Hall, 1400 Main St.
Sponsors of the rain garden program are the Summit Soil & Water Conservation District, the Summit County Planning Commission and the Great Lakes Commission for Erosion and Sediment Control.
The Village Hall project will be a demonstration model to educate residents about the value of rain gardens to help control excess storm water runoff.
The conservation district will outline the plans at a meeting of Lakemore officials at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.
Anyone wanting to volunteer to help install the garden can contact the village at 330-733-3804.
Commission plans
hearings for July 28
WADSWORTH: The Planning Commission has scheduled two public hearings for its July 28 session.
Proposed zoning amendments that would ban outdoor furnaces and would require manufactured homes to be placed on permanent foundations will be discussed at the 7:05 p.m. hearing.
A second hearing at 7:15 p.m. concerns a proposal to develop residential units for seniors on the north side of Johnson Road just west of Silvercreek Road.

WOOSTER: Wayne County Children Services is offering free classes to help parents of children from newborns to age 11. A waiting list is being maintained before classes are set up. Call 330-345-5340 to register.

Panel OKs renewal
of Spring Hill plan
GREEN: The city's planning and zoning commission has approved a one-year renewal of a preliminary plan for 38 lots in the Spring Hill residential development off Boettler Road near South Arlington Road.
The commission has also granted Verizon Wireless conditional approval to locate additional equipment on an existing tower off Wise Road and west of Interstate 77. The agreement includes installation of a 297-square-foot equipment box within the existing fenced area.
