AKRON
Gunfire wounds man on Clark Street
AKRON: A man, 18, was shot while walking in South Akron.
The victim told police he was in the 1000 block of Clark Street about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when he passed a large fight in front of a house.
The man said he heard several popping sounds, felt pain in his buttocks and realized he had been shot.
The victim was transported to a local hospital.
His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Police had no description of the assailant.
Suspects arrested in armed robbery
AKRON: A 19-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint by three men on Romig Road.
The man told police he was near the bus terminal in front of Rolling Acres Mall shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday when the incident occurred.
Akron police arrested two suspects, Lionel Mitchell, 22, of Himelright Boulevard, and Angelo Justice, 25, of Glenn Street.
Mitchell was charged with robbery and Justice was charged with aggravated robbery.
A gun used in the robbery was recovered.
A third suspect got away, police said.
Police close streets as crews battle fire
AKRON: Akron police had to close two streets in the North Hill area Wednesday afternoon because of a fire.
Police shut down Cuyahoga Falls Avenue and Dayton Street due to a fire in a vacant two-story house at 800 Dayton St.
Fire officials got the blaze under control at about 2:30 p.m.
The fire appeared to have started in an upper floor. A neighbor said she heard glass breaking at about 2:10 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the house.
No one was hurt.
The house, which neighbors said has been vacant for several years, is divided into three units.
AG candidate plans fundraiser
AKRON: A fundraiser for state Treasurer Richard Cordray, the Democratic candidate for attorney general in November, will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the O'Neil House, 1290 W. Exchange St.
Tickets are $250 for guests, $500 for silver sponsors, $1,000 for gold sponsors and $2,000 for platinum sponsors.

BARBERTON
Men at scene of fire await arraignments
BARBERTON: Two 23rd Street Northwest residents accused of keeping information from police about a fire that gutted a Liberty Street home await an appearance in Barberton Municipal Court.
Dustin Riffle, 25, and Randall R. Gibson, 20, are charged with one count each of failure to report a crime, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
Wayne Anderson, 33, of 23rd Street Northwest, is under indictment by the Summit County grand jury for arson.
Police said Riffle and Gibson were with Anderson on June 9 when he allegedly put a pillow into a kitchen cabinet of a vacant home at 1076 Liberty Street then set it on fire.
Gibson and Riffle reportedly stood in the yard of Anderson's home and watched as Barberton firefighters extinguished the fire.
Riffle is scheduled to appear for arraignment today. Gibson is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. — Gina Mace

Narcotics stolen in pharmacy robbery
BATH TWP.: Thousands of doses of narcotics were stolen during the Monday break-in of a Bath Township pharmacy.
An employee of Colonial Pharmacy, 1915 Cleveland-Massillon Road, arrived at work around 8:30 a.m. to find a broken rear window and the rear door open.
Inside, the cash register was destroyed and the money drawer missing, along with 5,000 to 10,000 tablets of narcotic prescription drugs, according to a report of the incident.

HUDSON
Fire destroys barn near golf course
HUDSON: A Barlow Road barn was destroyed by a fire Tuesday afternoon, Hudson fire officials said.
The fire, called in by people at Ellsworth Meadows Golf Course at 4:06 p.m., drew firefighters from Boston Heights and Valley Fire District.
The barn is owned by Robert Chilton, who was not at home at the time of the fire.
Flames were shooting through the roof of the 20 by 30 foot building when fire officials arrived on the scene.
Barlow Road was blocked for two hours while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and overhaul the area of the fire.
One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation, officials said.
MASSILLON SCHOOLS
District appoints interim school chief
MASSILLON: The former president of Stark State College of Technology has been named interim superintendent of Massillon schools.
John McGrath will lead the district from Aug. 1 to Jan. 31 or until a successor to outgoing Superintendent Fred Blosser is found. Blosser will retire at the end of this month.
If McGrath works until Jan. 31, his salary would be $65,000, district Treasurer Teresa Emmerling said.
McGrath retired as head of Stark State in Jackson Township in 2003 after more than 20 years as president.
Last December, the Massillon school board chose Chris DiLoreto, a former administrator, teacher and coach in the Massillon district, as Blosser's replacement.
But DiLoreto later resigned.
Blosser, who has headed the Canton and Dalton districts, was hired in 2006. His base salary is $95,000.
NORTH CANTON
Candidate planning picnic for fundraiser
NORTH CANTON: A fundraiser picnic for state Rep. John Hagan, R-Alliance, who is running for Stark County commissioner in November, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
The picnic will be at Dogwood Park, 241 Seventh St. N.E.
Food will be provided by Tina and Christina Hagan, John Hagan's wife and daughter.
The event will also feature a bake sale, with homemade pies and sweets, and family activities.
Suggested donations are $50 per person.

ROOTSTOWN
Two teenagers hurt in crash with train
ROOTSTOWN: Two teenagers were injured early Wednesday morning when the pickup truck they were in was hit by a train in Rootstown, the State Highway Patrol said.
Matthew T. Marsh, 17, of Atwater, the driver of the vehicle, and Hayden D. Welch, 17, of Rootstown, were both taken to Akron City Hospital following the accident that occurred at 12:25 a.m.
Marsh is currently listed in satisfactory condition. Welch is listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Marsh, who was traveling northbound on Industry Road south of Tallmadge Road, attempted to go around the crossing gates and was then struck by the train, authorities said.
Both teens were wearing seat belts.
The crash is being investigated by the Ravenna post of the State Highway Patrol.
SUMMIT COUNTY
Green Task Force to meet today
AKRON: The Summit County Green Task Force will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. today in council chambers at the Ohio Building, 175 S. Main St.
The group is pursuing methods of increasing energy efficiency of county facilities; promoting construction of green buildings; improving air quality; improving solid-waste management policies; and recommending a plan to promote environmental literacy throughout the community.
The task force meets monthly — future meetings are scheduled for Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 30, Nov. 20 — with recommendations expected by the end of the year for council and the county executive.
Councilwoman Louise Heydorn chairs the group.
