Cascade Community Church is celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend.
The church, located at 1190/1196 Inman St. in Akron, was founded on Christmas Eve in 1977 to reach out to the gay community in Northeast Ohio. It was chartered in January 1978 and continues to serve both homosexuals and heterosexuals. It has had three pastors in its 30-year history.
Today's celebration begins at 7 p.m. and includes music, entertainment, a 1978 retro quiz and a discussion on homosexuality and the Bible. The 11 a.m. Sunday anniversary service will feature the Rev. Samuel Kader, pastor of Community Gospel Church in Dayton. Kader is the author of Openly Gay, Openly Christian: How the Bible Really is Gay Friendly.
