Homes, businesses and cars damaged; no estimates so far

Residents in the Barberton-Norton area in Summit County and Canton and North Canton area in Stark continued cleanup efforts Monday after a weekend storm that brought hail and high wind damage.
The extent of the losses from Saturday evening's storm is still being tallied by insurance companies.
Al Morris of Motor Cars of Canton, 2739 Fulton Road, said he didn't know his business had been hit by the hailstorm until he came into work Monday morning.
''We have about 30 cars damaged, from convertible tops with holes in them, hoods, roofs, car doors and chrome molding luckily, there was no glass breakage on the cars,'' said Morris, the general manager. ''The side of the building was also damaged.''
Morris estimated damage to each car will range from $1,000 to $3,000. ''It's a small used car lot and we are low on inventory, but damage is damage.''
Only one car was parked inside.
Insurance company representatives said auto claims are typically filed first because the damage is obvious.
Progressive Insurance has set up a drive-through at Belden Village for auto damage assessments. It set up tents in the parking lot at 4450 Belden Village Ave. N.W. Insurance media representatives said the outside claims outlet opened Monday and will be open through the week.
American Family Insurance said most of the hail damage calls it received were in the Canton area. There have been 30 property claims and 90 auto claims.
Nationwide Insurance reported 255 claims so far.
The Ohio Insurance Institute, which is a trade association representing insurance companies in the state, offers advice to area residents:
Damage caused by high winds, tornadoes and hail are covered by homeowners, renters and commercial insurance policies. The institute said typically the cost associated with removing fallen trees is covered up to $1,000, but any damage to a resident's trees, shrubs, plants or lawn because of wind or hail is not covered.
Costs incurred from taking measures to protect against further damage is reimbursable under a homeowners policy. An example would be placing plastic over a damaged roof or covering windows to prevent further rain damage.
The group warns homeowners to take care when hiring a contractor for repairs. Be sure to do background checks and check with the local home builders association or the Better Business Bureau.
