Church destroyed by blaze

Fire at vacant building takes 2 hours to control

Beacon Journal staff report
MASSILLON: More than a half-dozen fire departments responded to an early morning fire Friday that destroyed a vacant Massillon church.

According to Stephen Collins, an assistant chief with the Massillon Fire Department, city fire crews responded at 2:49 a.m. to reports of flames coming from the grounds of the Heartland Behavioral Healthcare Center, 3000 Erie St S.

''Upon arrival crews found the old Protestant church on the grounds to be totally involved, with flames through the roof,'' Collins said.

Low water pressure from nearby hydrants created a problem for firefighters, and assistance was requested from the Jackson, Perry and Plain
Township fire departments, which shuttled water, Collins said.

In addition, fire crews from Brewster, Dalton and Canton Township assisted in fighting the fire, which took more than two hours to control.

A vacant gymnasium next to the church was watered down as a precaution against the flames spreading.

Collins said the church was the only structure that was destroyed by the fire.

There was no damage estimate, and there were no injuries.

Collins said that the church and other nearby structures, which are owned by the city, were vacant and scheduled for demolition.

The fire is under investigation by the fire department and the state fire marshal's office.
