• Capt. Hylton Baker, commander of the Summit County sheriff's drug unit, received a national award of Outstanding Task Force Commander from the Ohio Density Drug Trafficking Areas unit. Baker was responsible for the confiscation of 5,362 pounds of marijuana, 160 grams of heroin, 503 grams of methamphetamine and 24 kilograms of cocaine from April 1, 2007, through April 1, 2008.
School news
• Akron native Wellington Reiter was named president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He had been dean of the College of Design at Arizona State for the past five years and before that, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Reiter grew up in Canton, where his father ran a dairy business.
• Pamela S. Bossart of Plain Township and Stephen E. Yoder of Uniontown were inducted into the Stark State College Alumni Hall of Fame for their personal and professional achievements. Bossart is an operation principal who oversees corporate data facilities for the Timken Co. She also is president of AFCOM, Northeast Ohio's data center manager user group and is president of the executive committee for the Stark Regional Planning Commission. Yoder is president of the Stark Truss Co. and is president of the Ohio chapter of the Wood Truss Council of America.
• Mount Union College awarded a Dean's Scholarship to Lauren Pruneski of Uniontown, who plans to major in business management accounting, and to Laura Heben of Akron, who plans to study Spanish; a Trustee Scholarship to Amanda Rose of Uniontown, who plans to major in international business; and a Founder's Scholarship to Trevor Groot of Uniontown, who plans to major in accounting.
• Eric Michael DeWitt, son of Albert DeWitt of Sagamore Hills and Penny DeWitt of Akron, received a Tuition Equalization Scholarship to attend Bluffton University. The scholarship guarantees that qualified students will receive nonrepayable aid equal to the difference between tuition at Bluffton, which is private, and that of select four-year public institutions in Ohio. Dewitt graduated from Revere High School.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Tawuan C. Williams, son of Linda Bacon of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
• Army Pvt. Vincent C. Thevenin, son of Darrell Thevenin of Hartville, graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
• Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Kevin A. Harvey, son of Rhonda Sumlin of Cleveland and stepson of Eric Malone of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of James Ford Rhodes High School in Cleveland.
• Air Force Airman Deborah J. Young, daughter of Jeffrey Young of Wadsworth and granddaughter of Sue Loney of Cuyahoga Falls, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2006 graduate of Wadsworth High School.
• Air Force Airman Cory R. Smith, son of Susan Smith and Gilbert Rice, both of Cuyahoga Falls, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Life Skills Center in Akron.
• Joshua N. Molyneux, son of Ralph and Angela Molyneux of Akron, received an Air Force ROTC scholarship to attend the college of his choice. After graduation he will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.
• Andrew J. Riddle, son of Patricia Riddle of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Garfield High School in Akron.
• Army Pvt. Paul T. Emig, son of Sandra Miller of New Castle, Pa., and David Emig of North Canton, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2006 graduate of the Shenango Area High School in New Castle.
• Army National Guard Pvt. Anthony E. Weihrauch Ernest, son of Anita Ward of Wilson, N.C., and Jeff Weihrauch of Rootstown, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Wilson Fike High School in Wilson, N.C.
• U.S. Army Lt. Ryan M. Janovic, son of Mary Jo and Dr. Tom Marshall of Akron and Michael Janovic of Milford, Ohio, was among 14 people to be appointed to the 2008-2009 class of White House Fellows. He is a graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Webster University.
• Army Spec. Holly M. Aguridakis, daughter of Vicki Brand of North Canton, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 1996 graduate of Carrollton High School and a 2006 graduate of Kent State.
• Army Pvt. Joshua R. Dean, son of Kristen Dean of Stow and Mellisa Britcrietz of Topeka, Kan., graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
• Army Pvt. Chad M. Couch, son of Deborah Collazo of Ravenna, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2002 graduate of Twinsburg High School.
