Weathervane is seeking funds for expansion

Weathervane Community Playhouse, the Akron theater company, announced Wednesday a capital campaign to raise nearly $1 million for expansion and renovations.
The campaign, announced during Mayor Don Plusquellic's weekly news conference, is dubbed Setting the Stage for the Future. It aims to raise $975,000 to upgrade Weathervane's Merriman Valley theater in time for the 2009 season — the theater's 75th.
Construction is to begin in March. Planned improvements include expanding the lobby, refurbishing the auditorium and replacing the seating. Weathervane officials also plan to add sections of removable seats for flexibility and improved wheelchair access; expand the women's restroom; relocate the box office and gift shop; and create more administrative space to free up classrooms for the theater's increased focus on education programs.
At the news conference, Weathervane Executive Director John Hedges said that the renovations will help the theater become a bigger and more important part of Akron's quality of life. He said Weathervane hopes to transform itself into one of the country's pre-eminent theaters, which in turn should make the theater a vital cultural contributor to the city and help revitalize the economy of the Merriman Valley.
''We at Weathervane look to contribute to our community in many ways: artistically, economically and as a leader in the education and development of our most precious resource — our young people,'' Hedges said.
''This capital project is a direct outgrowth of that desire and a vitally important element toward reaching our goals. In planning this project, we have taken inspiration from our leaders — leaders like Mayor Plusquellic — as well as other people and organizations in our community that are putting Akron 'on the map.'
''We have been inspired by the notion that Akron is a place for innovation, by projects like the dynamic expansion of the University of Akron, Canal Park, Lock 3, the amazing Akron Art Museum and many others that have all made a contribution. We look to join them.''
The project is to be completed by September 2009.
