Green energy expo
Saturday downtown
AKRON: The free Northeast Ohio Green Energy Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the John S. Knight Center, 77 East Mill St.
Keynote speaker Dr. Lonnie G. Thompson will discuss Retreating Glaciers: A Paleoclimate Perspective From the World's Highest Mountains from 11 a.m. to noon.
There will also be lecture tracks, green-collar job opportunities, electronic and paper recycling and other activities.

Fundraising events
celebrate jazz music
AKRON: The Cascade Locks Park Association will celebrate jazz on Howard Street with two August fundraising events.
Hot Jazz! Puttin' on the Ritz will be from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the Innerbelt Nite Club. That includes dinner and jazz performances by Flohism, Jack Schantz, Dan Wilson and Evelyn Wright.
The jazz will move to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad on Aug. 30. The excursion will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and includes hors d'oeuvres, beverages and live music.
Tickets are $75 a person per event or $125 a person for both events.

can apply for grants
AKRON: The Millennium Fund for Children is accepting grant proposals from nonprofit organizations for programs that work to improve the lives of children.
The Millennium Fund is a permanent endowment that is a partnership between the Akron Community Foundation and the Akron Beacon Journal. It makes grants of up to $2,000 each year to children's groups throughout the Beacon Journal's circulation area with the goal of supporting grassroots programs.

The deadline for applications is Sept. 1.
