Hungarians make it to games

Boys soccer team stuck in Philadelphia takes bus to Akron just in time for opening ceremonies

By Bill Lilley
Beacon Journal staff writer

The Hungarian boys soccer team competing in this week's 2008 JCC Maccabi Games arrived in Akron a day late and by a different route, but they made it here in time to participate in Monday evening's opening ceremonies at the University of Akron's James A. Rhodes Health & Physical Education Building.

The contingent of 10 boys and two coaches flew from Budapest to Paris and then arrived at the Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday morning. Bad weather forced cancellation of the scheduled flight from Philadelphia to Detroit.

''We were going to have a bus bring the Hungarian soccer team from Detroit to Akron, but the bad weather prevented them from getting to Detroit,'' said Mark Baer, chairman of the games' transportation committee. ''We don't know which end the weather problems were on, but we did know they were stuck in Philadelphia.''

Baer then got a bus from Carnation Coach out of Alliance to head to Philadelphia on Sunday night. The bus picked up the Hungarians on Monday morning and got them to Akron in the afternoon.

Baer said that about half of the 350 out-of-town athletes arrived by air service and the other half by bus.

''We were pretty fortunate in that we really only had the one problem,'' he said.

Home away from home

One hundred and twenty-one Jewish families are serving as hosts to the 350 out-of-town Maccabi athletes.

The host families are required to get the athletes to a designated area at Summit Mall at 7 a.m. each day so the athletes can be taken by bus to their competitions.

The athletes return by bus to Summit Mall in the evening and are taken home by the host family for the the night.

Today's competition

Basketball and soccer competition resumes today with the final rounds of pool play.

Basketball games are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Shaw Jewish Community Center and Firestone High School. Soccer matches will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the four fields at the Copley Road Soccer Complex.

Tennis competition continues from 8:30 to 5 p.m. today at Copley High School and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shaw center.

At 8 a.m. today, bowling begins at Stonehedge Place and golf begins at Akron's Good Park course.
