City cannot afford to restore Longwood Manor

MACEDONIA: Longwood Manor, the oldest building in Macedonia, might soon be torn down.
The 16-room Tudor home built by Col. William Frew Long, the first mayor of the city, was condemned March 12 and could be torn down by Sept. 12.
The Longwood Manor Historical Society brought Joyce W. Barrett, director of historic preservation for Heritage Ohio, a preservation group, into town last week in an attempt to lobby for support to save the building.
''Our message is where there is a will, there is a way,'' Barrett said. ''If they want this property, they will find a way to save it. If they don't want it, they will find a way to demolish it.''
The Longwood Manor is among the top 10 listed on Heritage Ohio's Top Preservation Priorities List for 2008.
The home, said Michael Hlad, the city building commissioner, is ''what we call a dangerous building.''
Macedonia Mayor Don Kuchta called the building, built
in 1924, a ''landmark in Macedonia for a long, long time'' and ''something that I believe in.''
But the mayor concedes the city simply cannot afford to restore the home.
''We would like to have a historical marker like this,'' he said. ''How do you do that when you are $227,000 in debt?''
After the city condemned the building, there was a 10-day time limit to appeal the edict. No appeal was filed.
Kathy Thomas, president of the historical society, said her group was not aware of the time limit to file an appeal to block demolition.
She said the group has been ''busy all summer to get the house fixed'' and said unfortunately, the building ''is facing the wrecking ball, very shortly.''
She added that the building ''is the only piece of history left in Macedonia.''
Hlad said it will cost the city about $34,000 to tear the building down and that doesn't include the cost to remove asbestos.
The city estimated several years ago that the tab to restore the structure would cost $500,000.
There are no plans for the site at 1634 East Aurora Road should the building be razed.
The building is located in the 292-acre Longwood Park.
