Passenger dies in fall from car
AKRON: An Akron man died after falling out of a vehicle early Sunday morning.
Jordan Wells, 19, of Chittenden Street in Akron, died at 9:21 p.m. Sunday at Akron City Hospital.
Wells was a passenger in a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Jeremy J. Rittwage, 19, of Pinetop Court, Akron. Wells fell out of the car as it was turning onto Swartz Road from South Arlington Street in Springfield Township at 6:44 a.m., the Canton post of the State Highway Patrol said.
Wells was leaning out the passenger front-door window when he fell out and landed headfirst as Rittwage was making the turn, troopers said.
Rittwage was charged with underage consumption of alcohol and possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana.
An autopsy was to be performed at the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. The incident remains under investigation, the patrol said.
Miller South School to have open house
AKRON: The Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts will hold an orientation and open house for this year's students from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
The school at 1055 East Ave. is for students in grades four through eight who have an interest in the arts and have earned admission through auditions.

Democrats hosting Obama celebration
AKRON: The Summit County Democratic Party will hold a party to celebrate Sen. Barack Obama's expected nomination for president from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Aug. 28.
The event, which will be at the St. Joseph Family Center, 610 W. Exchange St., is open to the public. Free tickets are available at Obama's Akron campaign office, 3 Merriman Road, or the party's headquarters, 438 Grant St.
Obama is scheduled to accept his nomination that night during the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Those who attend the party can listen to Obama's speech and hear from a ''special guest,'' whom local party officials aren't revealing. Food and refreshments will be provided.

New traffic signals at 3 intersections
AKRON: The city of Akron's traffic engineering division announced that new traffic signals are operating at the intersections of First Energy Driveway and White Pond Drive, Buchtel Avenue and College Street, and East Exchange and Windsor streets.
New learning center to hold dedication
AKRON: The dedication ceremony for the new Forest Hill Community Learning Center at 850 Damon St. will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 26. The school will open for classes Aug. 27.
The school will include art and music classrooms and a media center. A large playground and activity fields stand in place of the former Forest Hill building.

AKRON: The city is having a public meeting about community development and housing needs.

CANTON: Congressional candidate John Boccieri has agreed to five debates with his opponent, Sen. Kirk Schuring. The debates will address the most pressing issues facing voters in Ohio's 16th Congressional District, the state senator said. ''There is so much at stake in this election. Voters deserve more from us than 30-second sound bites or misleading attacks from shadowy Washington groups. . . . We need serious debates in fair forums with unbiased moderators who are going to focus on issues this community really cares about.'' Here's the schedule:
• Sept. 5, noon: AARP/Stark State College of Technology, 6200 Frank Avenue N.W., North Canton.

Intruders tie up man and loot apartment
COVENTRY TWP.: Three intruders burst into an apartment, duct-taped a resident to a chair and stole appliances and personal items, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office. Investigators said the resident answered a knock on his apartment door around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2000 block of South Gregg Avenue. He was confronted by three men — one carrying a shotgun — dressed in dark clothing.
The resident was not hurt.

Rubber Duck Race to benefit schools
CUYAHOGA FALLS: The school district's PTA council will hold its 19th annual Rubber Duck Race on the lazy river at Water Works Family Aquatic Center on Aug. 29.
The festivities, which feature prizes, games, music and concessions, begin at 5 p.m. The race gets under way at 6 p.m.
Participants can adopt a duck — $5 each or $20 for five — and cheer it on to the finish line.
First prize is $300 and second is $200.
Proceeds go to the scholarship fund for graduating seniors at Cuyahoga Falls High School.

Robber threatens to shoot store clerk
FAIRLAWN: Fairlawn police were looking for a man who robbed a drugstore. The robber entered Rite Aid, 2975 W. Market St., around 4 p.m. Sunday and demanded money. A 63-year-old clerk refused and told him to leave.
An employee told police the robber went around the sales counter, confronted the clerk and ordered her to open a cash register. The robber threatened to shoot her if she did not comply.
The clerk ran out of the store and screamed for help. The robber followed her and fled. The clerk told police the robber never showed a gun.

Soccer complex will open Aug. 23
GREEN: The new five-field Spring Hill Soccer Complex will have its grand opening Aug. 23 with the first goal ''scored'' during the ceremony.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. Access to the fields will be from the construction driveway off South Arlington Road. Beginning in November, the access will be off the new Fortuna Drive extension.
Mayor Dick Norton, former Mayor Dan Croghan and Green Soccer Association President John Piersol will address the gathering before a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring current and former members of the Green Parks and Recreation Board and representatives of the complex's development and construction firms.
Amanda Gamble and Justin Thacker, Green High School girls and boys soccer coaches; Councilman Jim Colopy; and Service Director Randy Monteith, among others, will pass a soccer ball to a Green soccer participant, who will make the ''first'' goal. The facility has automatic irrigation with field drains.
The complex brings to nine the number of soccer fields for youth and adult games in Green. Games featuring teams of the Green Soccer Association, will be played following the ceremony.
''We create community and quality of life through people, parks, and programs,'' said Mike Elkins, superintendent of Parks and Recreation. ''We're proud and excited to open Spring Hill Sports Complex and look forward to many great events at the park.''

Annual arts show to be held in park
GREEN: The Green Arts Council and city of Green will host the fourth annual fine arts show called Art-a-Palooza at Boettler Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 30. Admission will be free.
The show will include more than 60 area artists whose mediums include painting, fiber, ceramics, glass, photography and more.
Woodcarver Norm Kanieski, Green native and glass artist Marianne Hite, fiber artist Connie Bloom and Green ceramic artist John Walsh will be some of the featured artists.
A free activity tent will let children 2 to 12 make and take art. Free entertainment will be held throughout the day. Food will be available.

West Nile virus found in mosquitoes
NORTON: Three mosquito samples collected in Norton have tested positive for the West Nile virus, the first in Summit County this year.
The Barberton-Norton Mosquito Abatement District has begun nightly spraying to eliminate mosquito breeding in the area around Clarksmill and Shellhart roads and Inas Drive.
The virus has been found in 16 mosquito samples around Ohio: seven from Franklin County; two each from Cuyahoga, Lorain and Hamilton counties; and one each from Summit, Stark and Lake counties.
The virus is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes and can be life-threatening. Ohio has one human case of the virus this year from Ottawa County.
People are advised to take steps to keep from being bitten and to eliminate standing water around their homes.
SUMMIT COUNTY
Mosquito spraying planned this week
SUMMIT COUNTY: The Summit County Health Department will spray for mosquitoes today in Macedonia and Sagamore Hills Township.
The rest of the week's schedule is:
• Wednesday: Northfield Center Township.
• Thursday: Clinton and New Franklin.
The spraying will begin at 8:30 p.m. In case of rain, winds and cool temperatures, the schedule might change.
