Fairlawn church drops cell-phone tower plan

Faith Lutheran heeds neighbors concerned about safety, appearance

By Bill Lilley
Beacon Journal staff writer

FAIRLAWN: The council of Faith Lutheran Church has voted to end plans to put a cell-phone tower on church property at 2726 W. Market St.

Faith Lutheran had planned to sign an agreement with T-Mobile for the 140-foot-high tower in late June and then submit it to the city for consideration.

But opposition to the plan by St. Hilary Catholic Church and other neighbors, who said the tower would be an eyesore and a potential danger to children who use soccer fields in the immediate vicinity, led the Faith Lutheran council to reconsider.

''After a period of discernment by the congregation's leadership and consultation with nearby residents, community leaders and our neighbors at St. Hilary,'' council Vice President Mark Watkins said, ''we made the decision to stop plans for the cell tower.''

The Faith Lutheran council is made up of its pastor, the Rev. Jean Hansen, and 12 elected lay people. Hansen said two overriding factors prompted the council to drop the plan.

''Everything we do must be consistent with our mission and vision, which revolves around sharing the love of Jesus in the world,'' Hansen said.

''The most important factor was how the Christian church is viewed by the community. We also want to do that which will create positive relationships with our neighbors around us. We thought the best decision was to drop the plan.''

Placing the cell tower on church property would have brought in at least $15,000 a year to Faith Lutheran, with the potential to increase that revenue to $30,000 annually if other services rented space on the structure. The money would have helped the church to expand several of its programs.

''Expanded outreach would have helped to fulfill our vision,'' Hansen said, ''but the big picture is important. We still have some things in the works, but nothing specific enough to talk about right now.

''We wanted to focus on this situation first and make the best decision and make it first.''
