Events remember servicemen killed in Iraq

Stark motorcycle ride, camp in Brecksville and Portage picnic and walk set

By Jim Carney
Beacon Journal staff writer

Three events in the next several weeks will memorialize Northeast Ohio servicemen killed in Iraq.

The first will be the 1st Lt. Aaron Seesan Memorial Scholarship Charity Ride on Sunday.

The Army officer from Massillon was killed in a roadside bombing on May 22, 2005.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Aaron Seesan Memory Garden at Lincoln Park, 644 17th St. N.W., Massillon.

The last rider will leave at noon. The event is hosted by the Ohio Gold Wing Road Riders, Ohio Chapter 1.

This is the third year the scholarships have been awarded and the first year for the fund-raising run.

Two $1,000 Seesan scholarships are given out annually — one to a Massillon Washington High School graduate and the other to a graduate of any Stark County high school.

The scholarship winners are chosen based on academic achievement, community involvement and financial need, said Michael Seesan, brother of the late serviceman.

For information about the event, call 330-830-2049 or 330-936-5865 or e-mail seesanride@sbcglobal.net or go to http://www.aaronseesan.org.

The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) will hold a Survivor Seminar & Good Grief Camp Sept. 12-14 at the Cornerstone Bereavement Center, 5905 Brecksville Road, Independence.

TAPS provides a support network for families of those who have died in service to the United States.

For information about the seminar, call Scott Warner, father of Pvt. Heath Warner, who was killed in 2006, at 330-280-6350.

For more about TAPS, go to http://www.taps.org. or e-mail info@taps.org, or call 202-588-TAPS (8277) or 202-457-8277.

The first Cpl. Ben C. Dillon Remembrance Walk & Scholarship Walk and Picnic will begin at noon Sept. 28 at Edinburg Park on Rockspring Road, about a half-mile north of state Route 18 in Edinburg Township.

Participants will walk from the park to Edinburg Cemetery, where a memorial service will be held.

Dillon, an Army Ranger, was killed by small arms fire from insurgents on Oct. 7.

After the memorial service, walkers will return to Edinburg Park, where there will be a picnic with grilled hot dogs, potato salad, chips and soda.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger. Those attending get a T-shirt, food, drink and entertainment.

Proceeds will go to the Cpl. Benjamin C. Dillon Memorial Scholarship Fund to help seniors at Southeast High School.

The first scholarships were awarded to three 2008 graduates for essays they wrote.

For information, call 330-325-2115.
