No new talks in PARTA dispute

Union drivers could strike on Monday; federal mediator in the wings

By Jim Carney
Beacon Journal staff writer

No new negotiations are scheduled this weekend in a labor dispute at the Portage Area Regional Transit Authority.

However, W. Frank Hairston, marketing/customer service/EEO director, said a federal mediator has asked both sides to keep Sunday open.

On Aug. 15, the Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 37 filed a 10-day strike notice with the State Employee Relations Board.

A strike could begin Monday, the first day of classes at Kent State University, where union drivers transport about 5,700 students a day.

Hairston said the transit authority has offered to meet with the union before the strike deadline.

''We're hoping they want to sit down at the table,'' Hairston said.

On Thursday, the union filed an unfair labor practice charge against PARTA, based on the agency's conduct at the negotiation table.

Trina Molnar, OAPSE field representative, said the union and PARTA have been at an impasse for more than a year.

The union, which represents 55 to 65 drivers, is trying to get its first labor contract with the bus agency, Molnar said.

PARTA, based in Kent, provides transportation to about 7,700 people a day.

PARTA drivers are paid between $8 and $14.05 an hour, Hairston said. The agency has proposed a three-year contract with a 3 percent raise the first year and 2.25 percent raises in the next two years, Hairston said.
