Presidential candidates get invites

McCain and Obama asked to attend football game at Canal Fulton school

By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer

Wanted: A presidential candidate (or two) to attend the Friday night football game at Northwest High School in Canal Fulton.

Candidate(s) could hobnob with voters from both Stark and Summit counties.

That's the pitch Therese Stengel of Canal Fulton made this week to Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain's campaigns.

Stengel figures the candidates might be able to work in a stop at Northwest's game against Firestone because both will be in the area.

McCain heads to Dayton for a rally Friday morning and Washington, Pa., Saturday afternoon. (That leaves Friday night open.) Obama will be done with the convention Thursday night and is attending Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones' memorial service in Cleveland Saturday morning. (Again, there could perhaps be an opening in there.)

''Down 77 to 21,'' Stengel said, helpfully providing directions. ''We're right there.''

Stengel thinks the game would offer the perfect venue for snatching votes in this battleground state, where the latest polls show the race in a dead heat.

''Friday night is high school football,'' she said.

Stengel, 58, a housewife who works part time and has two grown children, said many people — including herself — are undecided
about their presidential pick. She chose Sen. Hillary Clinton in the primary but voted for McCain in 2000. She wants to encourage people to vote and take an interest in the election.

Stengel received polite letters from both campaigns saying they appreciated her invitation but might not be able to accommodate it. But, she's not giving up — for this or, possibly, another game this fall.

''You never know what can happen,'' she said. ''Anything is possible. Anyone can be elected president.''

Paul Lindsay, McCain's spokesman, left room open for the candidate to make a future stop at Northwest High.

''As a former, mediocre high school athlete, John McCain enjoys every opportunity he has to watch football,'' he said. ''While he will be unable to attend this week's game, we hope Ms. Stengel will extend an invitation to him in the near future.''

Tom Reynolds, Obama's spokesman, gave a similar response.

''Barack Obama is a huge sports fan and appreciates the importance of high school sports in Ohio,'' he said. ''If the schedule ever allows I know he'd enjoy taking in a game under the Friday night lights.''
