The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or http://www.uwsummit.org.
The following organizations need volunteers:
Akron Civic Theatre: Volunteers needed during shows to take and count tickets, usher patrons, be box office escorts and provide will-call help. Minimum age: 16.
Akron General Medical Center: Volunteers needed 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to transport patients and visitors via wheelchair. Minimum age: 18.
Area Agency on Aging: Volunteer ombudsmen wanted to visit nursing home residents as a resident-rights advocate. The next 12-hour training session begins Sept. 9. Minimum age: 18.
Battered Women's Shelter: Volunteers needed weekdays to provide support and information to survivors of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault. Minimum age: 18.
Community Support Services: Volunteers needed one hour a week to visit older adults who are lonely or depressed. Minimum age: 18.
Crossroads Hospice NEO: Volunteers wanted daily to visit patients in their homes or nursing homes to offer comfort and encouragement. Minimum age: 16.
Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. weekdays to sort and deliver mail to various departments. Minimum age: 18, 15 with adult supervision.
Edwin Shaw Rehab: Volunteers wanted 10 a.m. to 3 p.m or 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays to help in gift shop. Also seeking volunteers Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings to transport patients to and from Spiritual Care Services. Minimum age: 18.
Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to with packaging and shipping materials and office or clerical tasks. Minimum age: 18.
Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers needed four hours a month to assist bird watching and birding excursions. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.
HM Life Opportunity Services: Volunteers needed 4:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays (Akron location) and 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays (Northfield location) to spend time with and help children with homework, tutoring, crafts, computers and games. Minimum age: 15.
Mobile Meals Inc.: Volunteers needed twice a month to provide grocery shopping services for homebound individuals. Minimum age: 18, younger with adult supervision.
Northern Ohio Recovery Association: Volunteers needed a minimum of one hour per week to mentor individuals recovering from alcohol, tobacco or drug use. Minimum age: 21.
One of a Kind Pets Rescue: Volunteers needed weekday evenings and weekend days to do data entry and mailings. Minimum age: 18.
Road Runner Akron Marathon: Volunteers needed four to six hours Saturday, Sept. 27, to help throughout the marathon course. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.
Ronald McDonald House: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every other Wednesday to help with cooking, office, clerical and housekeeping needs of families. Minimum age: 18.
Safe Landing Youth Shelter: Volunteers needed daily to mentor and spend time with youths residing in shelter. Minimum age: 21.
St. Thomas Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays to deliver mail and flowers. Minimum age: 18.
Summa's Palliative Care & Hospice Services: Volunteers needed to provide respite care (eight to 16 hours a month) and companion visiting (four hours a month) to patients and their families. Minimum age: 18.
Violet's Cupboard: Volunteers needed weekdays to help unload, sort and pack groceries for clients. Minimum age: 18.
