AnneMarie Sarvis, director of the Congenital Heart Information Network, knows firsthand the trauma of parenting a child with a congenital heart defect, the most common and deadliest birth defect worldwide.
That's why she got involved with the Congenital Heart Information Network, which, with the Children's Heart Foundation, is presenting Heart Strides 2008.
The fundraiser/family fun day is Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Registration is 8 to 8:30 a.m., followed by the warm-up, the 1.7-mile walk, and awards and closing ceremonies.
Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Children's Hospital at the Cleveland Clinic, Akron Children's Hospital's heart center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Associated Underwriters Insurance Agency, go to conquering congenital heart defects.
''It is truly because of our brave little boy Anthony that John and I feel so strongly about giving back and helping as many families as possible and help the CHD cause,'' AnneMarie Sarvis said.
''We always remember that when Anthony was born with his very complex CHD called tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia, we were told that he was too sick to save and that it would be best to not seek surgery and allow him to die at the age of 2 months.''
Fortunately, the Sarvises didn't listen.
''Anthony is still with us today 13 years later,'' his mother said. ''It has not been without countless open-heart surgeries, over a dozen interventional procedures, infections and months in the hospital. ''
