The Portage Park District is sponsoring its first Wild Hikes Challenge through Nov. 30.
Participants must hike eight of 11 trails to earn a hiking staff and tag.
The designated trails are:
• The Portage Trail, the Franklin Connector, from the Summit-Portage line to Hudson Road, in Franklin Township (2.6 miles), or from Towner's Woods to Lake Rockwell Road, in Franklin Township (1.4 miles).
• Beaver Loop at Seneca Ponds Park, in Streetsboro, (one mile).
• Headwaters Trail, Cuyahoga River in Mantua to Vaughn Road on the Mantua-Hiram Township line (3.1 miles), or state Route 700 to Limeridge Road in Hiram Township (four miles).
• Lakeside Trail, Towner's Woods Park, in Franklin Township (1.2 miles) or the park's Butterfly Loop (1.3 miles).
• Trillium Trail, in Dix Park, in Ravenna Township (1.2 miles).
Three of the trails are at preserves not yet open to the public and are accessible only on guided walks. These are in the Walter Preserve in Palmyra Township, the Chagrin Headwaters Preserve in Mantua and the Breakneck Creek Preserve in Ravenna Township.
The park district is accepting registration for guided hikes in October at the Chagrin Headwaters and Walter preserves
Hikers living outside Portage County will pay $10 for staffs and $5 for tags.
