Peninsula shop offers souvenirs, clothing, books about Cuyahoga Valley

PENINSULA: You will find Cuyahoga Valley National Park hats, T-shirts and books in the newest store in downtown Peninsula.
You will also find a $250 framed picture of a cedar waxwing by local photographer Jim Roetzel of Cuyahoga Falls and paintings for $300 by Sally Heston of Broadview Heights.
There are $65 handbags made of recycled plastic and $33.95 sassafras hiking staffs, plus jewelry and nature-themed modern sculptures.
There are 16-card postcard sets by the Cuyahoga Valley Photographic Society for $7.95, plus ranger dolls for $13.95.
There are hats, T-shirts and patches touting the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. And there are two cookbooks by George and Katy Hoy of the Inn at Brandywine Falls in Sagamore Hills Township.
Welcome to Park Place in Peninsula, the newest endeavor of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association.
The friends-of-the-park group quietly opened the park gift store/welcome center in July at 1593 Main St. (state Route 303) in what had been the Blue Heron Bookstore.
''It's off to a good start,'' said Deb Yandala, chief executive of the group.
The T-shirts, books and artwork are selling especially well, and more clothing will be added, she said.
There is a children's section, with a tree that youngsters can ascend through a spiral staircase in the trunk. Story hours are planned.
''People seem to like the ambience and the access to park information, the environmental-themed items and the local artists,'' she said.
The store lost money in the first two months but the loss was less than what had been projected, she said.
The association projects that it will take two to three years to break even, Yandala said.
The store sells drinks and snacks, but it draws a different clientele than the association's Trail Mix Store next to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in the hamlet of Boston, she said.
People stop in Trail Mix for drinks and snacks; they stop in the Peninsula store for books and souvenirs, she said.
The store is proving popular with people shopping and eating in Peninsula, as well as with passengers getting off the train, she said.
The association is trying to determine the best hours of operations, she said.
It was open seven days a week in July. That was scaled back to six days in August and it is now open five days a week: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The association would like to keep the store open five days through the winter, but that may not be practical, she said.

I expect those $14 ranger dolls will be flying off the shelf! MayFong! How ya been? Some of us regulars are using this new forum and Topix. Suggest you do same.
