Community news
• Eric Thorson of Green was the August Star Volunteer for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County. He has helped set up and operate the sound equipment at the park district's outdoor summer concerts and is a member of the Trail Patrol.
School news
• Frank N. Kelley, dean emeritus of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at the University of Akron, received the 2008 Paul J. Flory Polymer Education Award from the Polymer Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society.
• Kimberly Slone, daughter of Herbert and Sherry Slone of Kent, received a Dean's Scholarship to attend Mount Union College. She plans to pursue a degree in Spanish and accounting.
• Allison Pauly, daughter of Stephen and Betsy Pauly of Copley Township, received a Dean's Scholarship to attend Mount Union College in Alliance.
• The Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Akron honored these individuals and organizations with variations of the Buchtel Award, named for UA's founder John R. Buchtel: Lynn R. Metzger, a retired distinguished senior lecturer, the Buchtel Award in Humanities; Russell A. Livigni, retired vice president of GenCorp., with the Buchtel Award in Natural Sciences; David C. Luff, senior vice president of governmental affairs at FirstEnergy Corp., with the Buchtel Award in Social Sciences; and the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation in Hudson, the Buchtel Award for Corporations/Foundations.

• Army Pvt. Kyle J. Berlin, son of Trialee Berlin of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
• Benjamin M. Works, son of Alec and Margo Works of Fairlawn, graduated from Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2006 graduate of Copley High School.
• Army Spec. Stephen P. Pringle, son of Yvonne Pringle of Fairlawn, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He graduated in 2000 from Copley High School.
• Army Pfc. Samuel D. McDowell, son of Dashawn McDowell of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2004 graduate of North High School in Akron.
• Navy Seaman Richard G. Wood completed U.S. Navy basic training at at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Coventry High School in Akron.
• Navy Seaman Recruit Corbin J. Sincere, son of Robin Foster of Akron and Jack Sincere of Cuyahoga Falls, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls high School.
• Marine Cpl. Matthew Smilek, son of Mark and
Smilek of Cuyahoga Falls, was promoted to corporal. Grandparents are Donald and Edna Carver of Medina and Marvin Schrolucke of New Philadelphia.
• Army National Guard Pvt. Brittany N. Fox, daughter of Eric and Lisa Fellows of Norton, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. She will graduate in 2009 from Norton High School.
• Air Force Airman Michael T. Karam, son of Michele Karam of Barberton, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2003 graduate of Barberton High School.
• Air National Guard Airman Jina M. Kyle, daughter of Georgia Kyle and sister of Georgia Smith, both of Akron, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She graduated from Central Hower High School in Akron in 2000.
• Air Force Airman Kenneth R. Preston, son of Kenneth Preston of Canfield and Lori Preston of Massillon, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
• Air Force Airman Timothy M. Osborn, son of Mike Osborn of Lodi and Regina Remington of West Salem, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2005 graduate of Cloverleaf High School.
• Six area students were commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army ROTC: Justin Walsh, Patrick Jones, Joshua Hallisey and Jamie Broadwater at Kent State and Katrina Clark and Jason Killey at the University of Akron.
