In the Region: Man shot on University of Akron campus

AKRON

Man shot on campus
AKRON: The University of Akron issued an alert to students early Friday morning after a shooting on Sumner Street.

Akron police said a 21-year-old male was shot in the lower back during a confrontation with another male at a party.

The victim, Myguel O. Roberts of Bedford, was transported for treatment to a local hospital, where his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The suspect, Christopher L. Wilson, 19, of Cleveland, was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

Wilson was booked into the Summit County Jail and is scheduled for arraignment in Akron Municipal Court on Monday.

UA said a man in police custody matched the description given by people at the party. A firearm has been recovered.

''For that reason, the University police have concluded that [there] is no immediate risk of safety to the campus community,'' the e-mail said.

Police seek suspect
AKRON: Akron police are asking for the public's help in locating a second suspect in this month's shooting of Joshua M. Robinson of Cuyahoga Falls.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Travis L. Elder, 18, who last lived in the 800 block of Cole Avenue in Akron.

Robinson, 23, was fatally shot Sept. 18 in a parking lot in the 1200 block of Virginia Avenue. He was killed during a robbery.

Akron police have already charged Marc Kirksey Jr. with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery.

Center work begins

AKRON: St. Vincent-St. Mary High School broke ground Friday on a new Student Activity Center at the school's campus on North Maple Street in Akron.

The project is the final phase of the school's $20 million five-year Share the Vision Capital Campaign. It is slated to be completed in the spring of 2009.

The center will be constructed between the school and football field and will include basketball courts, a wrestling room, fitness center, locker rooms and athletic offices.

D.C. mayor to visit
AKRON: Washington, D.C., Mayor Adrian Fenty will campaign for Sen. Barack Obama today in Ohio, including two stops in Akron.

Fenty will give volunteers a pep talk before they begin canvassing at 1:45 p.m. at Obama's Akron campaign office, 3 Merriman Road. He will then participate in a faith forum at 2:45 p.m. at Faith Temple Church of the Living God, 701 Sylvan Ave.

Fenty, elected mayor at age 35, is the youngest person to be mayor in that city. He formerly worked for late Ohio Sen. Howard Metzenbaum.

14 held in drug bust
AKRON: Fourteen people were arrested and crack cocaine, methamphetamines and marijuana were seized during the latest gun-violence reduction sweep through Akron.

Authorities from the Akron Police Department, U.S. Marshal's Office Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Division, performed the sweep Thursday night.

Law enforcement agencies have been conducting similar sweeps throughout the year.

Meth trio sentenced
AKRON: An Akron woman, her 24-year-old son and the woman's boyfriend were sentenced Friday to six years in prison for running a drug-manufacturing operation at a home on Nesmith Lake Boulevard, authorities said.

Rena L. Cutright, 54; her son, Aaron J. Cutright; and Joseph A. Molnar, 51, were found guilty of illegal manufacture of drugs, illegal assembly of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and related drug offenses in a jury trial this week in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

In March, the Summit County Drug Unit searched Molnar's home and a camper in the 2700 block of Nesmith Lake in Akron. Officers seized chemicals, tools and drug paraphernalia used to make methamphetamine, prosecutors said.

Investigators also reported finding five guns, one of which was stolen.

BARBERTON

Drugs found in home
BARBERTON: Barberton police say an attempted burglary helped them uncover a suspected drug house.

Police responded to a call at a home on South Van Buren Avenue around 9 a.m. Thursday when a 17-year-old said he was shot at after confronting a burglar.

A bullet was recovered from a neighbor's house, police said.

While investigating the attempted break-in of the South Van Buren home, police said they found two ounces of powder cocaine, an ounce of crack cocaine, marijuana, four guns and more than $26,000 in cash.

Resident Donald Martin, 31, was charged Friday in Barberton Municipal Court with possession of drugs.

The investigation is ongoing, police Chief Michael Kallai said in a news release.

Court public information officer Ed Ferenc said the case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.

Stow recently began dispatching for Tallmadge and Mogadore.
TWINSBURG TWP.

Motorcyclist killed
TWINSBURG TWP.: A Hudson motorcyclist was killed in a crash about 4:45 p.m. Friday on Ravenna Road.

Andrew Mayes, 19, was driving south at a high rate of speed on his Yamaha when a northbound Chevrolet S-10 truck, driven by Rayeanne Helms, 44, of Cuyahoga Falls, made a left turn into a parking lot in front of him, the Summit County Sheriff's Office reported.
