Sports has all-star teams.
So why not education?
The first Summit County ''All-County Teaching Team'' has been named.
And the teachers will be honored Oct. 13 during the Summit County Education Celebration banquet at the Student Union Conference Center at the University of Akron.
The honorees are: Teresa Noland, Akron Public Schools; Danielle Starkey, Barberton City Schools; Mary Jo Worthington, Copley-Fairlawn City Schools; Rebecca Dimeff, Coventry Local Schools.
Shirley Burris, Cuyahoga Falls City Schools; Erich Muzi, Green Local Schools; Betty Banks-Burke, Hudson City Schools; Bradley Petraitis, Manchester Local Schools; Bruce Parker, Mogadore Local Schools.
Janis Roskoph, Nordonia Hills Schools; Harry Timms, Norton City Schools; Susan Alexander, Portage Lakes Career Center; John Faust, Revere Local Schools; Paula Murphy, Springfield Local Schools.
Jeanette Ladner, Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools; Nancy Jones, Tallmadge City Schools; Lisa Milano, Twinsburg City Schools; Norma Hammond, Woodridge Local Schools; Michael McDonald, St. Sebastian in Akron representing parochial schools; and MarySue Watson, Chapel Hill Christian School in Akron representing private schools.
The teachers were nominated by their community and chosen to represent their school systems by a selection committee.
The 2008 Teacher of the Year will be announced the night of the banquet, along with Rookie of the Year and Lifetime Educator Achievement awards.
A social hour will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be at 6 p.m. Tickets are required to attend and are $25 each. They are available by calling 330-484-6622.
The event is sponsored by the University of Akron, Akron Children's Hospital, WKDD (98.1-FM), WHLO (640-AM), 1350 Sports Radio, Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio.com, and the Summit County Educational Service Center.
Scholarships in the honorees' names are being provided by the Ohio National Guard. Gifts for the All-County Teaching Team will be given by Sterling Jewelers.
