Foundation awards more than $250,000

Austin-Bailey Health and Wellness giving grants to 17 nonprofit organizations in four area counties

The Austin-Bailey Health and Wellness Foundation has approved grants totaling more than $250,000 to 17 nonprofit organizations in Stark, Tuscarawas, Wayne and Holmes counties.

United Way of Wayne and Holmes Counties received the biggest grant — $29,985 to continue support of the Wayne RxNet initiative for those unable to afford prescription drugs.

The other grants were:

• The Stark County Health Department, $25,000 to support its dental clinic.

• The Viola Startzman Free Clinic in Wooster, $25,000 for a certified registered nurse practitioner.

• Holmes County General Health District, $22,190 for the Community Clinic's indigent care program.

• Pegasus Farm in Hartville, $20,000 to cover operating costs for the second year of the Veterans Salute Program.

• The Golden Key Center for Exceptional Children in Canton, $20,000 for a new center to provide child care for special needs children.

• The Dalton Volunteer Fire Department, $16,243 to purchase a LifePak 12 cardiac monitor/defibrillator.

• The Hartville Volunteer Fire Department, $15,645 to purchase a LifePak 12 cardiac monitor/defibrillator.

• The Village Network in Smithville, $15,000 for horticulture therapy and training for children residing at their facility.

• The YMCA of Wooster, $15,000 for water safety and swim lessons for children in Holmes and Wayne counties.

• NAMI Stark County in Canton, $12,500 to enhance mental health programs.

• Pregnancy Support Center in Canton, $12,450 for a new medical clinic.

• SpringHaven in Mount Eaton, $6,900 for depression/anxiety workbooks for group therapy.

• The Western Stark Medical Clinic in Massillon, $5,733 for dental supplies and equipment.

• Pathway Caring for Children in North Canton, $5,725 for supplies for adult training in first aid, CPR, crisis prevention and intervention plus life-care training for teenagers.

• Greenleaf Family Center in Wooster received $2,980 for an instructor and supplies for sign language classes for 150 participants in the Amish community.

• Tuscarawas County Public Library, $2,500 for health and wellness books and DVD resources for seniors.

The Austin-Bailey foundation, which was established in 1996 from proceeds from the sale of Doctors Hospital Inc., has awarded grants totaling more than $4,750,000 since its inception.
