Kucinich takes plight of owner who shot herself to Congress; Fannie Mae forgives mortgage

Published on Saturday, Oct 04, 2008
The shots that 90-year-old Addie Polk fired into her chest as she was about to be evicted from her foreclosed Akron home were heard in Washington, D.C.
On Friday, as Congress was preparing a bailout of Wall Street, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Cleveland, took the House floor and decried Polk's plight.
By midafternoon, the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) announced it would dismiss its foreclosure action against Polk, forgive her mortgage and allow her to return to the home where she's lived since 1970.
In the meantime, Polk remains in Akron General Medical Center.
She is expected to recover from the chest wounds she suffered Wednesday when she apparently shot herself as Summit County sheriff's deputies came with foreclosure eviction papers.
Robert Dillon, Polk's longtime neighbor, was one of the few visitors the woman al
lowed on Friday. He said Polk's condition was good and she was resting well.
It was Dillon who climbed through a window of Polk's LaCroix Avenue home and found the widow lying in bed bleeding. A small-caliber gun was next to her.
''She said it was a crazy thing to do, now that she's had time to think about it,'' said Dillon, her neighbor for 38 years. ''You know, the good Lord works in different ways. Maybe what's happened to her will help a lot of other seniors in this country.''
Court and property records show that Polk took sole ownership of the home in 1995, when her husband, Robert, died. They had bought the 1,200-square-foot house in 1970 for $10,000. It was paid off in 1982.
In 1997, Polk took out a $21,000 mortgage; in 2001, she paid off the original loan with a $46,400 mortgage. She refinanced again in 2004, taking a 30-year mortgage for $45,620 from Countrywide Home Loans.
Fannie Mae assumed the Countrywide loan after it filed foreclosure action against Polk in September 2007. She ignored the lawsuit and notices left at her home.
The home was sold to Fannie Mae at a sheriff's auction in June. Deputies were to escort Polk from her home Wednesday when gunshots were heard inside.
Brian Faith, a Fannie Mae spokesman, said the case came to the company's attention after publicity about Polk's apparent suicide attempt and Kucinich's statements about the case in Washington.
''Just given the circumstances, we think it's appropriate,'' Faith said. ''It certainly made our radar screen.''
'Human face' on crisis
Kucinich said he read about what happened to Polk in the Akron Beacon Journal and rushed onto the House floor to relay the story to his colleagues.
He said he is frustrated that the country's $700 billion financial bailout plan doesn't provide help to people like Polk.
''It doesn't address the problem of millions of Americans on the verge of foreclosures,'' he said. ''People need to hear this story. This is a human face for a great national tragedy.''
Polk's longtime friend DeWitt Herring remembered how excited the Polks were when they moved into the LaCroix Avenue home. Robert Polk was retired from Goodrich Tire in Akron. Mrs. Polk has no children of her own.
Herring said he and his wife often picked Polk up for dinner.
''We had her over the house a few months ago. She didn't let on she was having any problem. She kept her business very much to herself,'' he said.
The only hint that Polk was having financial problems came in a conversation Robert Dillon's wife had with her neighbor.
''A couple years ago, she complained about inflation eating away at her husband's pension. But that was it,'' Dillon said.
Pastor unaware of issues
Polk also never mentioned her problems to friends at the Akron church she attends every week. The Rev. David Dodson, pastor at Antioch Baptist Church, said he had no idea that Polk was in distress.
''She is the most pleasant individual that I've ever met. . . . She is very proud, very independent and pretty much a loner. She has never complained about anything,'' Dodson said. ''If we had known, if I had known, this would never had occurred. We would have rescued her.''
Dodson said that in his more than four years as pastor, the church has helped at least two other members stop foreclosures.
Akron City Council President Marco Sommerville said he intends to work with county officials to better help those facing foreclosure.
He said foreclosures are rampant in Akron. On the east side, he said 99 foreclosures were filed in one recent month.
One concept he is proposing would be written notification of available services to everyone who is served with foreclosure papers.
''The bottom line is there are a lot of other people out there that need help too,'' he said. ''And we have to find a way to help people and make sure they are not driven to taking drastic measures to get attention to their serious problem.''

This city is so entrenched in the welfare mentality that is is scary. Prediction: people will start shooting themselves all over town in the hopes of getting out of paying their bills and meeting their obligations.
Look at all the posts calling this women a welfare queen. Discusting republicans all of them. A 90 year old women, all alone in the world who worked all her life. The republican comments call a 90 year old women a welfare queen and yet say nothing of bailing out Wall street billionaires with hundreds of billions of tax payers dollars, Wall Street BILLIONAIRES who have jobs and make BILLIONS by bilking 90 year old women like this one.
My name is Gary Gelormino, I live in Seven Hills Ohio, 44131. You republicans gave trillions in tax cuts and corporate welfare to billionaire's and stole the money from 90 year old widows, like the one in this story. Be careful speaking in public, like you cowards speak in comments sections on the net. Theres true American patriots listening and arent afraid to fight for Americans. We true American patriots dont attack people who never attacked us...LIKE IRAQ...We arent afraid of neocon fascist nazis. Remember what I just said, be careful when in public, be sure to spew your republican hatred only at arms length and behind a computer....Gary Gelormino Seven Hills Ohio 44131
Akron Beacon: Its little wonder why your city (along with your subscriber base) is dying. You fail to inform the population with information, you neglect the responsibility given by the people , for a free and honest press. Pravda & Tass would envy you.
Republicans be careful, dont dare speak in public as you do behind a PC on these comment sections. True American patriots are "at arms length" in public places. You repubs destroyed America, look at it today. Gary Gelormino Seven Hills Ohio 44131
I guess the bailout helped pay for her house with our money. I guess we all own a part of her house now. Party at Addies!!!
Frank: You figure you own WallStreet now also? What did the old 90 widow get and what does she have that you want?
You refuse to acknowledge that billionaires recieved billions...on top of the billions they already stole. You think the 90 year old widow is to blame?
You probably think Bush is the greatest and they found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq too.
Ill never vote for obama ... and i have been a life long Dem...its time to drain the swamp and start over...this group is laughable if it wasnt so scary...till next post my comrades....
Barnie: You going to keep changing nics and posting BS? Let us all guess...you wish you could vote for George Bush again huh. Try holding a cardboard sign on the off ramp of route 77, saying "Bush is the best pres ever" and let us know how that works for ya kay?
Barnie: Myname is Gary Gelormino and I live in Seven Hills Oh...in case you were wondering
Well, Gary, I'm Democrat and I DISAGREE with the fact that she gets to live free and have her mortgage dismissed at the cost of the taxpayers. I am not one of the Liberal Democrats who think everyone should get a free ride.
I also disagree with the bail out plan too. These banks knew they were giving loans to people that couldn't pay them back! I guarantee a year from now we'll be in the same boat, and then who is to blame? We need to stop funneling money over to foreign countries too and bailing them out as well.
Ask any obama fan what 'change' means and they cannot answer the question.
Gary, you are a true patriot! Takes guts to stand up for what you believe in.
No need for so much vitriol, the lady make poor judgements in her dire need, it is a shame she felt so hopeless to try suicide. Political party affiliations aside, she is a little old lady, what is so wrong to help her? P.S.,, I am a proud republican.
has anyone seen my party, It seems to be lost
its time for the true Democrats to stand up and take back our party .. time to dump this goup of loosers...
time for true democrats to stand up and take back our party, and dump this group of loosers
hey gary... time for the deocratic part to dump loosers like you.. your everything thats wrong with my party.. and you keep telling everyone you live in seven hills like thats something to be proud of, i got news for you, nobuddy cares
Obama backers talk about change. Clintons administration started this mess with deregulation. The only change we'll see with Obama are the coins left in your pocket after the Dems tax us to death.
You repuke losers keep praying for that rapture. Dems like Kuchinich voted agaisnt the bailout of billionaires on Wall Street...the billionaires you refuse to mention. WE ALL SEE the fear you show. The 90 year old widow who owned a modest home and couldnt make ends meet because of repub policies. The repubs expanded goverment more then any admin in history of USA, drove a $10 trillion debt, worst budget deficit in American history, worst trade deficit in American history, Weakest dollar in American history, lied us into a war in Iraq and kept us there without victory...longer then USA was in WWII and we won. THEN YOU BLAME CLINTON???...You pack of pathetic losers
In case you repuke losers didnt realise that George W Bush has always had social medicine, just like his twin daughters, just like his daddy George H Bush, Just like his daddy Prescott Bush.
Seems you repukes think social medicine is fine for generations of repuke politicians and promote its bad for everone else. Try taking Bushes social welfare medical plan away from him and listen to him scream like a repuke. His entire family has been on the goverment dole for generations. Gary Gelormino Seven Hills Ohio 216-447-0081
you stupid americans will never learn; the original mortgage was paid for in 1982! nothing is said of this couples spending habits. in short; out of control. buy now and pay later is the mentality of most idiots. if they had medical issues; well all is forgiven as that is another nightmare for you to fix.
I wonder why a 90 y.o. woman has firearms in her house anyway? But this should not strike anyone as unusual: surprise, surprise; the age group with the highest suicide rate is seniors, not teenagers.
Many of us stand on the knife edge of destruction in a similar way: I am priviledged to be riding around in a heavily financed new car, and just qualified for a home loan to buy the dump I live in.
It's all gravy unless I get laid off. If THAT toothy beast comes up behind me out of the shadows and raises it's ugly head, a firearm may be the only reasonable act.
Find another job quickly enough to stave off disaster? In Ohio? It is a pipe dream.
And THAT'S as strong a condemnation of the economy as I need to issue.
My name is John Heath. I am not afraid of saying who I am, but I am disgusted by some of the comments I see. When a 90 year old woman, who is living off a pension made possible by her husbands many years of hard work, is ridiculed they way I see some people ridicule her in these comments it leaves me with a sense of despair for the future of this country. Where has the compassion gone for our fellow man in this country which we claim is the leader of the free world. People cry foul at the partisanship we see in national politics but have no problem calling a 90 year old lady, in total despair, a free loader. When we get away from this all consuming hatred mentality that is running rampant in our society like a mutant virus, and instead of belittling and castigating, everyone who does not agree with us, we sit down and start a true discussion of where we are, where we would like to go and what type of people we truly want to be then hope may return and we may be able to have respect for ourselves and others again.
If anyone would wish to join such a discussion then they can reach me at jheath009@centurytel.net. I, for one, will not hide behind anonymous postings.
Signed John Heath.
Repuke coolaid drinkers couldnt tell anyone how many millions are in a single billion (1000) or how many billions are in a single trillion (1000)
Since we are now in debt $10 trillion from the repukes in office...thats over $30,000.00 in taxes (WITHOUT) intrest on every man women and child in America.
WHO RAISED TAXES? REPUKES DID. They sold us out to China and Russia. The repukes gave America the worst broad market performance of any 8 yrs since the great depression. Could this by why they dare not speak in public places? Is this why they hide behind they keyboards? Is this why they are all internet Rambos and not in Iraq?
This is so so very sad, especially the comments being made about this 90 yr. old widow. I was very happy to hear her pastor say there is help available for situations like this. The Bible says we are to take care of our widows and orphans. I am a 70 yr. old widow and this frightened me as I can see myself in this situation in 20 yrs. the way the government is overtaking pensions, etc. My father is 95 who lives in the same area as Ms. Polk.....not a very good neighborhood but Akron is trying to rid the crack houses, etc. I tried getting help for my father in "Keeping Akron Beautiful", which I found to be a circus. He's put on a new roof, siding, tried his best to keep the inside nice and Akron can't trim his bushes or mow his tiny yard? Lord, help us all! And Angels be with Ms. Polk!
OK, so now we know what it takes to finally get help from Uncle Sam and the corporate elite. You have to try to kill yourself before they make you homeless.
The only way you win in this lifeless vs. homeless American roulette game is if the suicide attempt is unsuccessful. Not much of a choice or victory, eh?
Some of the posts here make me feel sick. If so many Americans are happy at a 90 year old shooting herself in desperation at her plight over a piddling mortgage, yet happy to pass the family silver over to the local bank because they have been foolish with your money and can no longer pay their own bloated salaries. These people would support diamond studded golden parachutes for such criminals.
It's a wonder why our country is in such a disaray. Bush has bailed out so many countries in past eight years and it's sickening, now billions and billions more is going to be given to those ones who is now taking from the taxpayers. God Bless American, especially the ones is saying hateful things and making jokes about the old lady who was loosing her house. Have you not noticed the other things your tax dollars have paid for within the past eight years? This country is worse off then some of you willing to admit. Not only are we in recession but it is going to get worse and I truthfully don't know when it will get better. Why some of you are still supporting McCain is beyond me. What a shame.
PS I am not he John Heath who posted earlier, but I entirely agree with him. Perhaps there is a little hope left for the US of A., John Lewis
GOD BLESS YOU REP. DENNIS KUCIINCH, for stepping in and seeing a crisis that could not be sat on. That a person like Mrs. Addie Polk to be bless to live 90 years to live the rest of her days not knowing if she had a home. But thanks to you and all prayers sent up to God, she can come back to her home. Marco Sommerville and others Blessings!
I agree with John Heath's earlier response to some on this post who would rather whine and complain than take responsibility for this. I fealt for Ms. Polk when I heard her story. You know the current state of financial affairs in this country is what leads to people in this country having to do just what she had to do. I believe her story should read:
High Medical bills, not enough income leads 90 year old to go into Mortgage debt to pay bills.
Where are her true neighbors to help.
I feel we should quit complaining and become more accountable as neighbors for folks such as her situation. How many more are out there like her.
John Heath, I agree with you,
Signed, Ken Byer
Gary, please correct me if I am wrong. To pass laws ,bills, etc doesn't it take both parties to vote it in? The president has veto power. Doesn't this mean that democrats voted with republicans to make this mess? I'm a democrat too,yet I see so many problems for us if Obama gets into power. Do I like McCain,no, but he is the lesser of two evils to me.
It's only Republicans involved in this?!?!?!????? Give me a break . . .
New York Times, September, 1999: "Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
In addition, banks, thrift institutions and mortgage companies have been pressing Fannie Mae to help them make more loans to so-called subprime borrowers. These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than conventional loans.
''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0DE7DB153EF933A0575AC0A96F958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print
New York Times, Sept. 1999: "In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.
''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''
Of course, the whole credit/mortage mess was caused by p.c. politicians like Clinton trying to make it easier for low-income people (particulary minorities) to get a home. This plan was a timebomb waiting to explode and now it has. Poor people should not be given loans, period. People supporting Obama see the chance to get themselves on the dole. Watch out, your taxes WILL rise and the poor will get to stay at home and watch more Jerry Springer. p.s. - Gary will be the first to line up for his handout, after his shift at Taco Bell.
It notes she had no children--so she paid for your children's schooling--note if you go to a public school and then on top of that a state university--the tax payers portion of this--is well in excess of 100,000 dollars--bet she never complained about that. We all like to say we are taxpayers--but we are tax users as well--some more than others. She probably was living on a small pension and never expected to live till 90 and used up savings as well--and the money just went for increasing utilities, upkeep etc and note some of the money was used to pay back the loan itself--over four years--not really a huge amount of money. She was hardly living the high life. It is not fair that single people do not reap the same benefits as married people--social security, tax breaks, medical and more. They are essentially putting in extra to pay for someone else's spouse, life style etc. We all take a lot for granted--we get parks, education, libraries, police, security, national defense, emergency medical services, and a lot more. Yes--some is mishandled and things could be better---I think we can all say that about our personal lives as well--that we have mishandled and some things could be better. What mental capacity will you be in at 90? What physical capacity would you be in at 90? Seems like she has lived a fairly simple life and not asked for much--she may be that rare person who ahs put in more than they received. We all seem to want things to be perfect but someome else should pay for it.
There's a difference between
capitalism and
GREEDY capitalism.
We've been seeing GREED since the year 2000.
If this country doesn't change the way capitalism
is practiced then we are all doomed to be farmers again. This used to be a great country but there
are now too many greedy people. With privileges there are also responsibilities and those responsibilities have been thrown out the door.
You who are too quick to judge should ponder the thought that given the wrong circumstances you could also be in the same situation as that lady.
Don't be so smug.
I feel a lot of you here are very heartless people. For the sake of a argument numerous people in this crisis did not live beyond their means. This financial situation happen to be the fault of a lot of greedy big shot people in the high ups and the investors asking for more money. I for one am in the same situation that this poor soul is in. I didn't buy above my means, I bought reasonably, But I lost my job. I'm sure you'll all say why not get another job. Try to here in Florida. For those of you who are so heartless on here, may you never be in such a crisis like this. Cause what goes around comes around. I chose to vote for change for my family and my kids future, if the government can throw 700 billion away to wall street. Then I feel Obama/Biden are the change makers for the middle and lower class to help us out.
Let's have a little sympathy for an elderly woman who made a poor decision and think more about what was her state of mind to make her do such a thing.
I totally understand how someone gets so anxious, desperate that he/she makes an unwise, emotionally charged decision.
My husband (who is in his 80s) live off a small pension, and we are always worried about rising costs. We sold our home because we could no longer afford the high cost of maintaining eve a small home and rising utility costs. We downsized from a 3 bedroom 2 bath home into a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment. Now because of rent increases we must find a cheaper (yet safe) place to live.
My husband was born before the Great Depression. He knows hard times and, while today is not as bad as back then, wait a while.....
The rich never suffer no matter if they lose a million -- it's the poor person, the middle class, that gets hurt.
Always.
To Kimberly - I hope you find a job soon - not all people are like the selfish bloggers you see here. Some of these people may find themselves in such a position when they hear from their stockbrokers.
To Kimberly; Let this blog be a lesson for you in life. Repuke boys can only talk tough to 90 year old women who are lying in a hospital bed. Repukes send sheriffs with guns to throw 90 year old women out in the streets. Repukes send armored cars and guys with guns to deliver billions to Wallstreet billionaires...but send our sons and daughters to war based on a pack of lies and send them without up-armored humvees.....typical repukes republican nazi fascist scum.

New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae
By STEPHEN LABATON
"The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.
Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry.
'These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed."

Yeah, right. And the New York Times is such a right-wing newspaper, too . . .
Gary - quit listening to Terry Grosse of NPR all the time. And seek some therapy, you apparently need some help. Only a moron give out their phone number on a blog.
It should not be forgiven, because she made no efforts on her own and ignored everything. And the couple posters that say she was stolen from, she went into this contract on her own. It is her own fault.
hh
I'd like to meet the MORON at the bank who gave a 90-year-old woman a 30-year mortgage?!?! This person has more faith than the Pope if they think she'll live to 120.
It is too bad that Bush was leading like a democrat. He should have stopped the give always that clinton used to buy votes his first day in office. Clinton's paper economy was bound to crash and Bush let it happen. He was a RINO from day one. I would have loved for someone to have run for president that could be counted on and trusted. Well i guess i have to wait until 2012. 1/20/2012 can not come soon enough.
Democrats all their lives not voting for Obama? Could it be the color of his skin? How anyone could vote republican after bush is beyond me and why there is very little hope for America!!!
Hey, Democrats, (Dennis, Kucinich), I am a senior. Will someone pay off my Sears card? I am a poor Republican living below the poverty line too.
Sears was dumb enough to give me a credit card. Throw their arse in jail!
There must be some of the billions you spent on the War on Poverty laying around in your coffers somewhere to help me. I only get $28 a month food stamps.
Oh, I can't afford to live in Seven Hills, or even Six Hills. Heck, I can't even afford to live in Ohio!
I am a real person too and I approve of my message.
If Clintons economy was paper and was going to crash, what do you call Reagans' economy that crashed on George Bush? Oh, Reagan was a republican so he could do not wrong I am sure! Also don't foget the deficit was under control until cheaneys and roves puppet george got into office!!!
Gary
Don't have a coronary. Likely the sheriff who knocked on the door was a Democrat.
Keep posting repukes...just because you cant talk in public...keep showing how repukes are only tough on the internet and to 90 year old widows who are in the hospital. Show the world what cowards the republicans are....not like they dont already know it. Terrorists couldnt shut down Wall Street...But Bush and his repuke neocon nazis sure did it...Terrorists couldnt take away Americans freedoms like Habeas Corpus...but Bush did...Terrorists couldnt turn Americas allies against us....but Bush sure did...you repukes hate Americans...American soldiers...American patriots..and we are recording IP addresses...fema camps for you repuke fascist nazis come November!!!!
Go Gary. Guts man! Take the rats to the shed buddy.
Maybe Caribou Barbie will save the day for Mcsame. I doubt it though.
Gary, you are the man. Any takers yet. I doubt it. Most of them are spinless and to busy checking there 401k's and reading from the Book of Revelations.
Gary Rock's, Gary for President.
Gary does rock!!!
I am a republican and I am not fooled by the commie rhetoric that some people on this thread are spewing. It is a shame in this country to have someone who has worked all their lives to end up this way but, do not confuse the facts that several left wing politicians didn't see fit to regulate the lending industry. Please note I'm not saying anything bad about the Dems. I don't have the hate and vile in me that some people on this thread do.
Hey Gary, Whats with repeating your name and address and phone number over and over? Do you think it makes your B.S sound more plausable?
DEE: Seems you ignorant repuke neocon nazi's arent aware of the WHITE HOUSE PRESS CORP or recorded video or recorded audio or any modern tech!!!..I know...you think dinosuars were really Jesus horses. Bush is THE WORST PRESIDENT in the history of America...Democracy is funny that way...when the overwhelming vast majority agree...then its a done deal..you betcha ya..wink wink....DEE, you can leave America...we won't stop ya
okie dokie???..Hows this Sarah Plain talk doin it fur ya darlin?...can i call ya darlin?...Gosh and golly gee willickers..you repuke neocon nazi fascists are sure tootin stupid. DEE you couldnt mention one lie I told...and everyone in America knows that BUSH TOLD EM ALL...all lies all the time...thats ole GEORGIE fur ya ...
DEEE...go schlep stupid someplace else...the American public ain't buyin it no more....k?
Wow, 45 minute rant and you didnt answer the question? * giggle*
And Ummm Gary, shouldnt you at least know where I stand before you go off on a rant? Geee Gary , You should know what happens when you ASSUME.
DEE: I know you wont answer what I said that was a lie or incorrect...everyone knows...you assumed everyone would accept YOUR BS....I posted all truths and my name, address and phone number...you called everything I said BS in an attempt to slander the messenger and avoid the message...cause the message was all true DEE...now you dropped the DEE from your post even...cause you realise its damaged goods..just like the REPUBLICAN name...its nazi neocon fascist now...ask around DEE
LOTS OF WIND BLOWIN' HERE. POLTIICIANS GET PRESS - FANNY MAE LOOKS GOOD - SO - WHAT - ALL IS WELL ? THIS WAS SO A SCAM. AN ABSOLUTE CALCULATED MANUVER ON THE PART OF THIS LADY, AND PROBEBLY, FAMILY MEMBERS. CAN'T BELIEVE, FOR THE LOT OF FACTS, FIGURES AND STATISTICS SPOUTED OFF HERE, NOONE SPOTTED THIS. GEEE - MAYBE LIFE HAS JUST MADE ME CYNICAL.
What a shame that people would talk this way about a 90 year old woman. If this is where the money were going for the bailout I would not feel so bad about it. It is about time these predators did something for the people who are in trouble like this woman. She should have been helped sooner. Chris Soulsby, Akron, Ohio.
Gary said "All the repuke nazi neocons do now is whine..."Nancy Pelosi hurt my feeling so Iam not gonna vote".."
Apparently you are as ignorant as your post makes you look (just try to read it once...sheesh!) The DEMOCRATS only needed 12 of their people to vote it in and it would have passed...THE DEMS even said Pelosi should shut her freakin' mouth! Wake up, get educated, and think for your self for once, dumbace.
Hey Gary, get a life.....and some sleep too.
I have to say that Gary has the most powerful post I have ever read on any blog I have ever read. Not only does he tell it like it is, he has guts. His ranting would be as meaningless as any repuke but the thing that seperates himself from everyone by posting his name, phone number and address. I would vote for this guy for any office he ran for. He is without a doubt the bravest and toughest person I think I have ever witnessed in political blog debate. I'd hate to be on the other side of this debate.
Rosemary, to get some help with your elderly father's yard work, call Akron CYO Home Services. They have a program to help elderly Akron residents with yard work. God Bless!
Amazing how blind people on here are. To think that any ONE party is to blame for this mess is ASNINE. Osame and McSame both voted to bailout Wallstreet. Both promised to be against pork bills and then voted for them. Osame promised to be for the working people and instead voted to save his and other rich people's stocks, then he passed the payments off to the working middle class. I do not need change I need DOLLARS to support my family.
Drones who for a person because of the color of their skin, gender, or political association are the real people to blame for the mess that America is in. Americans used to have common sense, now the only thing we have in common is cents. Keep fighting with eachother over which party is at fault, ignoring their lies and their doubletongues. That is how they all got in power in the first place.

I am very glad that Addie is going to be ok and that she will be able to return to her home it is a crying shame when our elderly who work all their lives and in their golden years cant enjoy their life because the cost of living keeps going higher and it is a shame when others take advantage of that. To Gary I am a republican and my husband is a Democrat and we both agree that political affiliation has nothing to do with the disastrous state this country is in, it all comes from greed of the wealthy. So until there is someone who will look out for the little man and the elderly there will probaby be no relief, but to keep spouting that republicans are to blame is ridiculous. By the way I don't see your name on the ballot.
I'm wondering if Hanoi Jane Gary is giving out someones address and phone number other than his/hers. A prank ordinarily used in chatrooms for revenge that only would intrigue and be mimmiced by the mindless degenerates.
That could definitly be true g, but to call sincere posters and bloggers as degenerates is not right.
I may only be 29yrs old and some may think that I haven't been "around" long enough but, I've been around long enough to know how to treat a 90 yr old woman. NO ONE knows the whole and true story. People, including myself, that leave comments are only going by what we read in the paper or hear on the news. In the article it said she had no children of her own. To those elderly that have children, they are lucky. They have (hopefully) somebody caring and loving to look out for them. This lady did not. From MY experience some, not all, but some lenders are only out there to "get' people. And it just so happens that the elderly are a easy target. I do wonder though, why the Fannie Mae agent never did show up???? That would be very interesting to know.
Read it again Jennifer, i hardly called sincere posters and bloggers degenerates, but i will say that perhaps you need to take some sort of reading comprehension class.
iam not from ohio, but i strongly feel this woman young or old should not be forgiven for her debt. iam 39 years old and have parkinson disease and if my husband were to lose his job who would pay my mortage?? no one i would end up homeless! just because iam young why would it be different?? money is tight for everyone these days not just elderly people. lets she maybe fanny mae got in its mess by forgiving loans. oh and why did they do this right before goverment buys them out?? i say just to add to the debt we americans we have to make up for. do i sound bitter? well maybe iam a little. should we all exspect to have our debt forgiven if we make it to a certain age?? think about it...........
BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!! Let's forgive the mortgage on the woman that shot herself.... I wonder how many people will start shooting themselves now! "You do it for one, you have to do it for all" they'll argue. WHAT A MESS!!!! Is there anyone in this country that can actually make a good decision for once???
Democrat or republican... whatever. Regardless of which party you belong to, do you Dems seriously think that OBAMA-SHMAMA is the answer? The man is clueless! He looks pretty and reads pretty little speeches that are written for him off of a pretty lil teleprompter... yeah, sounds like a great idea to CHANGE? to what? what exactly will we be changing? history... that's it. A black president that rant he country into absolute turmoil. Great story for the textbooks

Hey All of You!
The problem in this country is hatred! Dems and repubs can't get along and attack each other personally! I read these comments and can not understand why anyone with an opposing view is a Repub.
I'm a lifelong Democrat! I commented on this story yesterday in the National news and I thought it was one of the SADDEST stories I ever heard! I too have a Grandmother who lives in Minnesota and receives less than $800 a month in SSN. Recently the state Democrats just voted against a law that would have exemped her from any future increase in Property Tax which is currently 2200 dollars a year. Every Republican voted for the law. I watch the votes and the Repubs are always voting for Senior Citizens tax relief. The Dems even voted down the law that would have exempted Seniors from State Tax on their SSN check! They are sad!
I am glad we are helping this poor lady, no matter what lead to this! What if she were your grandmother! It is the millions on welfare that we pay for that I disagee with!
They are able to work, but don't, and we all pay for it!
Being a lifetime Dem, I still will never vote for a Socialist Obama ever! He has ZERO experience!
THis is the prime example of PREDATORY LENDING.
Great Scott! It has been a long time since witnessing such anger and hate in the comments. This is not helping the situation at all, and in fact it makes things worse. I propose we sit down and discuss our differences like reasonable adults.
We as americans should rise above the hatred and anger, and find common ground.
We had a mortgage broker try to pressure us into a home I knew we could not afford. The tactics he was using to try to get us to sign was unbelievable. We just walked away and went somewhere else but it was hard to find someone honest. Why couldn't these mortgage companies just offer a honest mortgage,no ARM and no tricks in the fine print?
Me thinks johnny loves Gary ;)
I have always been taught to respect my elders. Having the elderly preyed upon is also disgusting. But, if seniors want to be respected and not disparaged, they should learn along the way, and do their homework. As with all borrowers, dont commit to anything until you delve into the fine print! We ask children to be responsible, expect the same from a 90 yr. old woman. She has had MANY yrs. to learn financial lessons, and she should know to ask questions and not be taken. A reverse mortgage might have been a better way for her to go if money wasn't being stretched far enough for her. Yes, my initial reaction was to reach out to this woman, perhaps even send her a donation of money, but now I am questioning why she didn't know more about money matters. She certainly knew how to apply for 2nd and 3rd mortgages. Hope I am not being too harsh, I understand her pastor said she is a proud, independent woman.
Everyone on here wants to drag in the presidental race, economy, blah blah blah BUT NOBODY wonders why the 62 year old neighboor (senior citzen himself) climes a up to the second floor when you hve TWO able body dept. WTH???? I am a criminal justice major and I can tell you that you don't let the old neighboor guy climb up and go through the window. If anybody should be outraged it should be with these two MORONS at the sheriff's dept that didn't bother to do their job. Instead of complaining and leaving stupid coments about the ecomony call the Summit Co. Sheriff's dept and demand to know why this happened.
I first heard of this story on MSNBC, Iwas apalled! And wanted more information, This story is truly sad when you know that today Oct 6th 2008 that Country Wide the original lender in this story was order today to make retrobution to morgage holders on the grounds of preditory loan practices. Including misrepresting the details or pitfuls of the morgages. In other words flat out laiing to their customers!! Shame on all of you that think that A 90 yr. old person who was liaed to should be thrown out of her home! Your grandmother, mother, aunt, father, so on and so on could be next.
I liked the idea about finding this woman a smaller place to live. A place that takes less care, and people will be around. She could use some friends and some help with general duties it sounds like.
This woman was financially incompetent. There is no excuse to be 90 and still has a mortgage. I'm in my 40's and paid off my mortgage several years ago.
I wasn't stupid to buy more house than I could afford or sign a variable rate loan. Of course if Clinton hadn't passed legislation so you could but a house with $0 down, the housing crisis wouldn't have occurred and there wouldn't have been a need for the bailout. The C-Lie-inton legacy lives on! This is why I will always vote Republican.
